If it wasn't us, it'd be something else, eventually, as these traits can be found in other species as well.

We just happen to be living in a time where humans have an unimaginable amount of control and influence over this planet. And it wasn't always like this, just like with other species. It's just a matter of time and evolution that eventually lead to dominance over resources - we just happen to be living in a time where we dominate all of them.

The system will eventually reset itself, I'm sure, especially as our population continues to multiply itself over and over to the point of complete instability.
