There are plans to Dredge the Great Barrier Reef believe it or not. It's insane and it has to be stopped.
The people involved tried to sneak it by us all but luckily some enviromentalists caught wind of it.
Below is a link to the website that will tell you all about whats going on and a petition to sign if you so desire.

I don't feel there is much more that i need to write except to say that the Barrier reef is an essential part of our global marine ecosystem and the thought of dredging it to make way for a coal/gas seam minning operation is just insane.

So without further adoo:

www.getup.org.au...

This affect's us all and i know that the community here on ATS will care.

Please if you want to flame me or troll then private message me and we can start an argument thread.

Thankyou

Can you provide any info as to where this is happening? The great barrier reef is so big! Which town or city is this happening in?

From the source linked in the OP.

The largest dredging project ever undertaken in Australia was approved to occur within the Great Barrier Reef WHA, at Gladstone Harbour, and is slated to remove a total of around 50 million cubic metres of soil.

Off of Gladstone, but given the extent of the plans it's gonna effect a very large area. read the info at the link provided. It gives all the relevant info.

All that link does is blab about the nature of the reef. It gives no evidence of anykind. The reef is on the World Heritage list. Gladstone harbour is Gladstone harbour and it's industrial and not in the national park.

I SAY THIS LINK IS BULL.

I started a thread about this last night www.abovetopsecret.com... and have a link to the 4 Corners program which highlighted and explained exactly what is going on. It's not the reef that's being dredged, but World Heritage area which could have flow on effects to the reef.

ok. so you don't buy it. Thats fine. But would you care anyway?

When i read something on here that i think is bull i usually just go and read something else.

If you search a little deeper you'll see that it is going to affect a lot of marine habitat, like the dugong's grassbeds for example.

The question needs to be asked, how much is too much? The harbour is connected to the ocean in which the reef is situated.

An online petition of people who don't give a rats should be compiled so that when the SHTF they can all go and live in the middle of it.

Well there you go.
Some further reading (or rather watching) on this topic.
For those that call 'Bull'.

This topic is worthy of much more consternation than it seems is currently being expressed.

I did make comment on zenius' thread but as this thread is still active in new topics firehose I felt it could use a 'bump'.
Check out this map from the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority ...

GBRMPA Map

They are planning to build 3 x coal seam gas processing plants on Curtis Island to convert the gas to a liquid. (which is in direct defiance of world heritage criteria)

Now thinking of this, picture the shipping that will inundate this area and calculate the risks of possible disasters, both from shipping as well as industrial accidents.
To facilitate the necessary draughts for large container vessels, the dredging is necessary, yet is already causing some issues with marine life in the area.

Some will say " yeah but it's at the southernmost tip of the reef " or " coral is tough and thrives on destructive forces " , do we really need to be doing it this way ? ( causing unnatural stresses to a pristine natural asset )

I have signed the petition at GetUp, it's a start but we need to keep on this ... the price is too big.

I said it last night but the greenies din't bother reading.
It is dredging of the harbour, not the reef itself.
The mud that gets dredged gets taken out to the spoil grounds and is dumped, it is in an area that flows away from the reef and not on to it.

But please feel free to continue with the sensationalist headline.
but please do not listen to me, I only worked on the reef and heard all this rubbish from so called experts who couldnt tell the difference between crown of thorn feeding and coral bleaching.

So it seems that a person is a tool if they believe what the media says unless the media is reporting about the destruction of something that deserves a protest.

Just because a person doesn't jump the gun it doesn't mean a person doesn't care.

There's been to many attempts in the last few years of the greenys trying to blow something out of proportion for anyone with half a brain to have a knee jerk reaction.

A link on the net to a site which doesn't actually give any real proof isn't good enough. Especially when it's on ats.

And to criticise a person for not having that knee jerk reaction shows that hype is what it's all about.
