My Dad wore those type of dickie shoes when he worked at Fort Eustis as a mechanic. His stayed that shiny, or better. Not sure why, but his never had the excessive creases that yours have. He claims that spit shining makes them crack worse, and he never used much water on his.

As I said, they weren't always in this type condition. Often sitting out on the backporch as utility shoes, even sitting through an entire winter there.

think dried out, mud-encrusted clod hoppers ... hence the deep creases, cuts and scars form the tiller and such

Not to mention the 45 degree tucked in sheets and folded underwear.

Underwear in six inch squares, m'man. That was always a hoot.

Well, it does teach attention to detail.

I,ve found using a regular sock to begin with and finishing it off with a dress sock works well for shining boots. I used to be in the Navy. I'd heat up the wax to where it was melted and spread it across the shoe with the regular sock and let it dry completly, then I would take the dress sock stretched a crossed it polishing it up really nicely and I never failed an inspection like that. I wish I had photos of my old boots but sadly I don't anymore.
