Any ideas on this ?

It is a dramatic upsurge.. 38 issued so far only 6 days into November. The total for the whole year in 2010 was 5
Nothing else comparable to this since 9/11 so what is happening?

Just to make it clear 38 in 6 days... That is not the total for 2011 but just this month!

Update : Answered. Jumped the gun on this one big time! There were 14 flight restrictions from 1st-13th November last year.. so 38 is not as dramatic in 6 days as it seemed.

Awesome web archive site, thanks for the link

Wow, that is strange. It says "restricted to VIP movement". See if you can find a map of the US whole and if you see a pattern.

What exactly don't you understand? The FAA has more no fly zones in the last 5 days then the last several years? It says "VIP movement if you click on any location?

It looks like the majority of the list is VIP and Security at just a handful of airforce bases.
VIP might be something that we could figure out who is going to be where when? For example is Biden hitting Delaware and Philly for campaigning?
The more interesting question then to me is the security at the couple of air force bases.
Also, it was odd how hazard alerts for certain places and dates were put out ahead of time?

Some could be down to the APEC meeting in Hawaii, reasonable explanation. But looking at other years still huge difference..

Makes you wonder, doesn't it?

How did you find the total for 2010? I tried to see what the total was for 2011 but couldn't find anything on your link. There did seem to be a lot of military bases that are included on the list.

Last Friday there were training excersizes in Phoenix, with lots of helicopters, but I did not see that on the list as a possible reason why air traffic would have been halted.

Maybe if we just take one?

Atlanta, Nov 7

What VIP is supposed to be coming in and out of Atlanta tomorrow around the times in the NOTAM? I suppose answering one location may give a hint to others?

Okay, after further looking I found a detailed text of the NOTAM and this is under the exceptions section:

2. APPROVED; LAW ENFORCEMENT, FIRE FIGHTING,MILITARY AIRCRAFT DIRECTLY SUPPORTING THE UNITED STATES SECRET SERVICE (USSS) AND THE OFFICE OF THE VICE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES, AND MEDEVAC /AIR AMBULANCE FLIGHTS.
Source

So I'm guessing that is Biden or someone in his VIP circle...? Perhaps that is one explained?

I wonder if it could be for the tests they are doing on the 8th. Still can't see why they would need too, very strange.

I mentioned this morning on the OK earthquake Joplin thread that there was unusual helicopter traffic going back and forth to the KC downtown airport. I was tempted to start a thread at 10am. I saw the same black one fin helicopter make 7 trips over or close to over in an hour. I thought they were giving rides at first but if it was a show type ride they probably would have turned once or twice.

"Temporary flight restrictions for Special Security Reasons"

The good of this it that it can mean anything, the bad is that it can mean anything...

The amount of flight restriction is certainly indicative of 'something' going on. Constant two way radio, must be squawking the signal the whole time if in airspace and be registered. A lot of dates are right around the 8th-11th.

The anxious believer in me hopes for disclosure and these air spaces are needed for E.T.'s.

Anyone know if these air spaces are around lunch platforms for nukes??

NO.....

38 issued so far only 6 days into November. The total for the whole year in 2010 was 5

A TFR is a Temporary Flight Restriction NOTAM.

Note the word "Temporary".

Those from last year (2010) that are listed on the FAA site only reflect the ones that are still in effect!!

I recall a thread from last year (2010) here on ATS, that brought up TFRs....there were many, many more in that year than is reflected on the current website of active NOTAMs.

For example....click on any NOTAM from 2010...like this one:

NOTAM 0/8326

Note the effective dates:

Beginning Date and Time : December 01, 2010 at 0401 UTC
Ending Date and Time : Until further notice

Misunderstanding about things aviation-related is common for non-pilots and other laypersons.
