Asteroid to pass closer to Earth than the moon

lightyears.blogs.cnn.com

An aircraft carrier-sized asteroid, a little over four football fields in diameter, is heading toward Earth and it will pass closer to our planet than the moon.

What Do All My Fellow ATS'ers think of this? I am not to versed on the subject, will the earths gravitational influence make this astroid a threat? You would think something this size would possibly fall to earth. Like I said I am not learned about things like this. But I am concerned seeing that FEMA drills are prepping for a Tsunami. I did a search and could not find a similar article. Sorry if this is a re-post!

Regards!

Type YU55 into ATS search

It's covered extensively.

Yawn, doom on, doom off, doom on, doom off, doom on, doom off. Am i making my point? all utter utter Bull, keeps us busy about worrying about other things rather than what is going on in the real world. Kind of poo poos on the intelligent design theory also does it not? i mean who would create all this wonderful stuff just to have an asteroid wipe it out or damage the inhabitants. Does not make sense too me, let it come like elenin, aliens blah blah.

Believe it when i see it.

If I remember right, a few months ago I ran across this story. It said the asteroid will be where earth was at 6 hours earlier. We should get a good naked eye view.

Good point, and I do not believe in complete earth destruction either, I just now that disasters can and will happen thats it. Nothing more, nothing further. Also I wanted to glean, not only destruction intel, but knowledge concerning this astroid, what effects will it have on earth, if any. Not the common doom and gloom scenerio, but what "CAN" it effect? Thank you.

The asteroid will have no affect whatsoever. It's far too small to have any gravitational influence. Asteroids don't have any electromagnetic influence. It won't hit, because the Earth's gravitational influence has already been accounted for in all asteroid orbital models. It won't be visible because it's too small to see with the naked eye.

If astronomers didn't have telescopes, it would pass by and no one would ever even know about it.

200,000 miles away is a long way away.... don't worry bout it hitting us unless some other object hits it and forces it closer!!

I am preparing a home made baseball bat out of a huge tree.I will be waiting and if that sucker comes close to me,I am going to hit it all the way to mars, then scream, that baby looks like it will leave the atmosphere, another grand slam for me.

yeah deffo won,t be visable with naked eye,you will need a telescope with an aperture of 6in at least

Although it is large, and it is coming by close, even if it does hit it wouldn't be that bad. Depending on how much got burned off in the atmosphere, and where it hits, it might just make everyone have a really bad day. There are worse things than an aircraft carrier sized asteroid. Like a moon sized asteroid.

I am going to add in that it most likely will not be visible to the naked eye as it is an object 400m long at 200,000miles distance.

Specifically, 2005 YU55 will be, at its closest point, about 3 times the apparent size of Pluto. So, if anyone can look out and see Pluto, then YU55 will be 3 times that. Good luck.
