Man, you guys grew up in easy families. 2 of my father's favs:

"Don't do what I do. Do what I say."

"I brought you into this world, I'll take you out."

I have not seen my dad's famous saying yet...so I'll share.

Whenever I would get in trouble (and this carried over well into my adult life...) I would call home and tell mom all about it...most of the time I would need bailed out of jail or some money sent to me for one reason or another...anyway my dad would always get on the phone and say:

"Son you made your bed...now you lie in it."

I always thought he was an a-hole when he came up with that every time something happened in my life...but as it turns out I was saying that exact same thing to my 18 year old daughter before I could stop myself...I guess after years of hearing it I finally understand what the old man was talking about!

Anyway...thats the one that has stuck with me most of my life.

My mother always says: Queen Elizabeth always says go to the bathroom when you have a chance.

don't know if its true or not, but traveling especially go so you don''t have to later and get stuck.

My childhoods friend mother had a few and one I use on my son:

You know what whining gets you?
Nothing....

I got the usuals from my dad:

close the door, are you trying to heat the whole neighborhood?

Just some that I have heard throughout my childhood from parents, friends, and people in general.

"Just because you can, doesn't mean you should."

"Believe you me"

"Defend me, Lord, from my friends, because from enemies I can defend myself."

"Hindsight is 20/20."

"Trouble never comes alone."

"Close, but no cigar."

Also a Romanian saying. Forgot were exactly I heard it, but it must of been in my childhood somewhere.

"Your money, Your life, or Your mustache."..

I suppose it's a variation on "Your money or your life"

Thank you to all of you for responding to this thread.

It is interesting and thought provoking to read what sayings people grew up with.

Our parents, grandparents etc. must of grown up with most of the sayings we have heard from them...that gives us some insight into how they were raised.
