A Level 1 hazmat response was ordered Tuesday morning after reports of a small explosion in the baggage claim area of the United Airlines terminal at Chicago's O'Hare airport.

Chicago police and firefighters have arrived at the terminal, authorities said. It is unclear if there are any injuries, and there have been no evacuations, Fox News reported.

WLS-TV reported that one person suffered facial injuries from the blast and was receiving medical attention.

Interesting development considering that this occurred in the baggage claim area. Makes me wonder what leaked out of someone's bag that could cause a small explosion.

The info is still coming in. The details are not very clear at the moment. But my memory insists on dredging up the liquids carried by the shoe bomber and the underwear bomber.

Makes me wonder what people are packing these days.

A little more information

It was unclear what prompted the incident near Terminal 1 Concourse C, which is not connected to the main part of the airport.

The incident reportedly was not in a public area.

Earlier Tuesday, a source reported to ABC7 that a small explosion had occurred, but according to Dept. of Aviation and police officials, it now appears some sort of large case or package fell to the ground after it was taken off of an airplane. It was not inside the airport at the time.

A baggage handler sustained minor injuries to the arm and possibly the face but was being treated at a hospital.

I can't think of too many substances that will explode on impact that can be legally transported on a passenger plane.

Now they are saying that it was a possibly a battery in a shipping container.

According to Chicago Fire Department Commander Will Knight, the fire department responded to O’Hare for an incident which what was believed to be a battery in a shipping container exploded while being handled by a United Airlines employee.
