This is real bad... and there's not much coverage about it in the western medias.

Bangkok floods: 'We may be evacuated'

Thailand is facing its worst floods in decades, with more than 340 people dead and a third of all provinces inundated.

Of the 280 houses on our estate, my wife and I estimate only about 80 are still occupied. There's 14 behind where we live and only three of them are occupied.

We've been in a state of preparedness for the last 10 days. The last two weeks we've been building clay dykes and filling sandbags.

Some people have even been using children's plasticine to seal their windows.

We had floods in April that were waist deep but the last flood in this scale was probably 1995. They are used to dealing with flooding

Bkk Gov Warns of High Tide Throughout Week

The Bangkok governor has come out to commend the government's decision to announce Oct 27-31 as public holidays. He suggests that city residents should take advantage of the situation and head out of town.

Head out of town... there's 8 million people in Bangkok and 14 million in the metro area... that's hell of an evacuation.

Is it me or have the weather patterns and natural disasters gotten more frequent, and in most cases more severe in the last 15-20 yrs?

HDD-MAKERS WILL TAKE A HIT

The Nation October 25, 2011 5:01 am

Output likely to slump about 15 per cent due to damage to manufacturing facilities in industrial parks

www.nationmultimedia.com/technology/HDD-MAKERS-WILL-TAKE-A-HIT-30168467.html

The severe flood situation in Thailand is predicted to hurt the hard-disk drive industry as Thailand is the world's second-largest HDD and component supplier.

Flooding in Ayutthaya's Rojana and Bang-Pa-In industrial parks and at Pathum Thani's Nava Nakorn Industrial Park have damaged the production of semiconductor components for hard disk drive and HDD manufacturers.

According to research firm Gartner, the planned production of 180 million HDDs in the fourth quarter of this year would have to be slashed by about 20 million to 30 million. The situation could be more serious than that as it is not known yet when production at any of the facilities in Ayutthaya and elsewhere could resume.

well, flooding is quite normal in SE asia, normal enough for most people to build their houses on stilts.

even the person quoted in the op says its normal.

I understand that, forgive me.
I just get so tired of people instantly debunking EVERYTHING within a matter of minuites of a thread being opened.

It appears to me that our planet is changing and natural disasters are on the rise.
Anyone saying otherwise is painfully and probably willfully ignorant.

My point is, this is yet another natural disaster taking human lives and it isn't over yet by a long shot.

thailand/bankok is overbuilt, overcommercialized, overtouristed, overdeveloped and to top it off, Bangkok is naturally a flood basin yet they chose to centralize the city in the middle of swamp. time to bring out the boat people restaurants and ride this torrential monsoon out!

Well actually it is proven by Scientists that the global temperature of Earth is increasing, with that said Scientists say that the amount of natural disasters will increase as well. In the last 10 years the average temperature has increased by 1 which doesn't sound like a lot but if you get it from a Climatologists point of view that is a drastic and frightening change. Every time the earth goes up 1 degree you'll start to notice more natural disasters and I guess phenomenons occurring, which is why you've noticed the increase in natural disasters during the past 10-15 years. Now, most Scientists and Climatologists are saying that if the earth temperature increases by 1 more degree it will be to late to even fix it, right now we still have a chance to fix what is wrong. I would go on about Green House Gases and Fossil Fuels but as some of you may know NASA and other Organizations have recently disproved the Global Warming theory because it has been proven that most of the heat in our atmosphere escapes into space, therefore Global Warming is a false accusation for what is really going on. And in my opinion I think Global Warming is a lie

By the way I know all this because of a documentary I watched in Geography. The documentary is called “Six Degrees Could Change the World”
