That somewhat happened, as has been discussed. Imagine if you make a collection of strong something, draped together with some sort of curtain. The
curtain keeps the sticks in place, and the sticks keep the curtain in place. This is sort of a minimalist design style. But if a fire or something
burned a part of the drapery, suddenly the drapery bellow and above is unstable, as are the sticks. This is what happened with the wtc, only rather
than sticks and drapes, it was concrete and steel. Something a lot less likely to stay in place at that scale.
The structure itself did remain after the "drapery" fell off. But the "drapery" was what was keeping the structure in place. Bam, it all came down
within a minute after the initial collapse.
