I use Https for almost all websites. I'm not sure if it's my settings or if ATS simply does not allow that setting. In the address bar, I never even see Http:. Can anyone fill me in on that?

Are you using firefox 7?

The missing http is a new, ahem, "feature" of Firefox 7. You need to make changes to Firefox if you want to see it:

How To: Force Firefox 7 (and higher) to show HTTP:// in URLs

Why are they always "fixing" stuff that ain't broke?

That article does say that FF is still showing https: but it has a point, old habit do die hard. I had to search out how to fix the http: omission (once I noticed it) as well...

Using any form of AdBlocker software is against the T&C, as far as using a proxy connection, I'm not aware of any official rule, but as another member pointed out, it could be used to flag your own threads and star your posts among a few different things.

Therefore it might be disabled for viewing the website. Although I'm not sure why anybody would want to use a secure connection for ATS. There's nothing on this website that would cause any form of 3 letter agency harassment or anything like that.

Unless the tine foil hat you have is defective

In theory I guess the idea would be to stop someone from stealing your password.

At my banking site I'm very concerned about that so I won't use anything but https there, but at ATS, if they really want my password that badly, I guess they can have it, I'm not sure what good it will do them!

Thank you for the replies. I don't have Ad-block turned on for ATS!
I'm going to check some of the other stuff.

I read about programs that people use to steal other's log in information on any forum or board. Using a safe Https: connection is sufficient to stop that, I read. Also, in some of the posts about Anonymous the Hacktivist, the computer geeks were threatening each other by claiming to have their IP addresses, thus home addresses because they were in the forum.

Firesheep: Intentions, Responses, and what's next? ABSTRACT: At ToorCon several weeks ago, Eric and Ian released Firesheep, a Firefox extension that simplifies HTTP Session Hijacking / Sidejacking. They were tired of seeing insecure websites that made a big deal out of user privacy with upper-layer controls (Facebook privacy prefs, for example) but neglected protecting the basic HTTP transport. This is nothing new, all of the big websites know about these dangers, and usually they protect usernames and passwords with HTTPS, but nothing more. Eric and Ian hope to push big sites everywhere to adopt site-wide HTTPS by making it painfully clear that the issue is real

codebutler.com...

Maybe it's true, maybe not. Found on this forum.
It's a reasonable question and it wasn't asked in any accusatory manner. It could be my settings.

Actually, there is a thread on the site that's more useful in explaining the why's.....perhaps?!
ATS Thread

Another ATS Thread

Apologies! It's already been covered and apparently there have been no changes!

Look at it this way HTTPS is not something you the user alone selects. It must be setup on the server. So while banks and such may require HTTPS for security reasons, other sites may indeed run both the HTTPS and the standard HTTP protocol. These sites will then allow you to use either at your discretion. And lastly a server may not be setup to use HTTPS at all, and then no matter if you type that in or not the server will never connect via HTTPS as it is not running this protocol.

So the ability to connect via HTTPS depends on a both the server owner installing and activating this protocol, and then you putting it in the URL as well. This tells me ATS does not support HTTPS login and thus no matter what browser you have, or how you have it setup, it will never connect to ATS with the HTTPS protocol

I did a small survey of forums.
I can't find any that allow https!
ATS is not unique in their set-up.
Interesting.....

Are you talking about the TV show? I've never seen it. I'm not exactly sure what you're saying. You're joking, right?

With Firefox it seems that when I copy the address from the address bar sans 'http:/', when i go to paste the address somewhere else the 'http:/' is there.

Now let's not get all conspiracied about this bug in their hosting software. It has nothing to do with a Ping returning from a hosting at Langley, Virginia and let's not go about talking about ties with espionage institutions which couldn't care less who you are or what your ideas might be. This is merely a protocol issue and has nothing to do with keeping tabs on the real identity of members for tracking or referencing purpose. Now let a sleeping dog lie and leave well enough alone. Word to the wise.

I am not naive enough to think that I can hide from 3 letter agencies by using https: and I certainly would hope that the people posting those comments from that level of naive, hysterical paranoia - aren't really that stupid.

I mentioned my concern. That wasn't it.

What kind of agenda do the posters have?

No one mentioned anything like that.

Paranoia may destroy ya.

You brought up the CIA and all that jazz, people.

Don't call ME paranoid. You are projecting.

I think you took the comment a little too seriously. note the initial comment was followed up with a tinfoil hat comment
so my interpretation was that it was clearly some playful banter after answering your question.

Furthermore, if you want to get serious, the https provides a MORE positive ID of the source, since the http can be spoofed and the https theoretically can't, so people worried about 3 letter agencies aren't necessarily going to prefer https as far as I can tell. As I think you indicated earlier, the site owner said it's not gonna happen so it's case closed unless some new issues pop up and a lot more people start asking for it, and even then it still might not happen if it's financially prohibitive to implement.

You asked a perfectly reasonable question, and I think you got your answer, so maybe they should have just closed the thread after that? But from my perspective I don't think anyone is trying to disrespect you, they seem to be just a little playful to me. Lighten up a little and smile.

You're right!

I am a little intense this morning.....

Coffee with whipped cream and a cookie for me.

I'll be a happy camper after that....

Blessings!
