In the background, the sound of gunfire is heard. The gunfire drowns out the chanting of a religious group. Many people hear these sounds and think of
the evil that is caused by this. While others hear the gunfire and chanting and are content because they have people protecting them, and allowing them
to chant in that fashion. The gunfire symbolising evil, or the chanting representing good is the perception of the person. This perception is what
causes evil, the gun is merely a weapon that is fueled by it. Though the gun is a weapon, and has caused many death, there is a weapon even greater
than it.
Weapons. This word is given to anything that can inflict harm to someone or something. What is a border between an item, and a weapon though? The
difference is not how the item is made, or how the weapon is manufactured, but it is the person using it. One person may see a pen and see it as a
device to write on paper, to produce ideas. Another person may see the pen though, and imagine how it could be used to stop an attacker if their life
is ever in danger. Another person may see the same pen and think of the secret it holds. They may think of what secrets it possesses, maybe a weapon,
or some drugs, or even the simple ink. These thoughts float around in a person's mind as the pen opens up, revealing a simple ballpoint tip that the
person uses to inflict harm. The pen was not the weapon that inflicted the harm though, it was the person who figured out the secret to using the pen
as a weapon. But while the pen is seen as a weapon to some, to others it is an almost divine device.
Language, writing, artwork, these are all creations that come from simple pen to paper, or any medium that allows a person to record information. The
early men used stones to record information, creating the magnus opus that is simple known as writing. The stones were just stones on their own,
sitting there, unable to move. But when a human saw this stone, and rubbed it against another one to produce a line, the stone became something
greater than that. The stone became an instrument. This instrument then gave birth to art, to music, and above all, to the foundation of further
creations. This would not have been possible though, except through the thoughts of the human who saw the stone. Others saw the stone later, and
though of banging it to make noise, while others saw it and thought of why was the stone there? Where did it come from? Though man has done many deeds
that are beneficial to mankind, there is still an object greater. There is still an object that can do more.
There have been civilizations that wielded this tool. Through this tool civilization has both fallen, and risen to greatness. Many arts and sciences
were produced with this benevolent object, but many people have fallen because of the malevolent side of it. An item that does both good and evil, can
it truly exist? It does exist, but how it works depends on the person wielding it. Unlike the items called weapons, this device of nature is not made
to follow one belief, but it is tailored to what the wielder wishes of it. How does a person use this great object though? Do they have to spend years
of studying and training so they can wield it? Does the wielder need to be part of a special group to acquire it? No, this object is available to
everyone, so many people use it daily.
The weapon has a simple name, and the name is the idea. The great tool has a simple name, and the name is the idea. An idea, with all the simplicity
of it, has given rise to many creations. From philosophies to works of art, from the sharpened stone to the nuclear warhead, Ideas have shaped
civilization and are still creating great things. It is through an idea that even a simple pen can become a weapon for murder, or write a work of
literature that would immortalize the author.
Ideas are the greatest of weapons in a warrior's arsenal, with it they can think of how to defeat even the greatest of foes. In the same way, it is
the most prized piece of a artists repitoire, with it they can think of how to create the greatest of works. You as the audience of this essay was
most likely thinking of what this great object was, and now that you know you act as if you knew it the entire time. That is an idea as well, the idea
of hind sight, where a person knows of something after it happened, and it was created by philosophers, who are people that study ideas, and
understand them.
This essay i wrote to signify how powerful humans are. The greatest of weapons come from ideas. The greatest of tools come from ideas as well. Even
ideas and beliefs that most people do not like to talk about come from ideas. Ideas are power, and human's are powerful because they can wield ideas.
