If you have a health food store you can purchase yeast in 1lb bags. A tablespoon of yeast into a soup mix on the trail adds fullness and flavor many
people never think about. Or buy in packets at the store for portability
You can also make breads on the trail if you have some flour and yeast. learn to make bread. My mom made a simple yeast bread for years passed down
from here grand mother etc. You will want quick rise yeast in most cases of bug out. Even at home if you if you need but have no bread.
Freeze flour in the freezer in gallon bags. .
Recipe
3-4 cups of flour
2 packets yeast
1 tsp salt
1/2 stick butter if available if not use appx 4 TBSP of any fat including oils
Add 1/4 cup sugar if available. If not will take longer for bread to rise, but it will be ok..i just like it sweeter.
2-3 cups milk. (we keep powdered milk on hand big time and it does work)
Warm up the milk and butter/oil [if you cannot touch the mixture it is too hot it needs to be around 110 degrees or the yeast will be killed by the
heat. stick you r finger in it. if you can hold it there your good to go with the yeast]
mix it into the flour along with everything else. Knead it by hand until it is smooth and elastic. You should be able to form it into a very soft
ball. if it is stiffer the bread will be more course but will be very edible.
If you get a little too much milk add a little flour..if too much flower add a little milk or water. Shape into loaf or buns ...then
It must rise until it is double its original size. you will need bread and need to know how to make it quickly and cheaply. Also look around the net
for ideas to make it easier for you
Bake in outdoor or indoor oven in anything you wish. if outdoors over fire keep it covered but keep in mind it will rise..There is a thread on making
bread in a situation of duress and it is excellent. I believe this is the one.
