Netflix Abandons Plan to Rent DVDs on Qwikster

8:41 a.m. | Updated Abandoning a break-up plan it announced last month, Netflix said Monday morning that it had decided to keep its DVD-by-mail and online streaming services together under one name and one Web site.

The company admitted that it had moved too fast when it tried to spin-off the old-fashioned DVD service into a new company called Qwikster.

So, I posted earlier on their decision to split up the service, and it seems that they've actually 'listened' to their customers and are now ditching the idea of splitting the streaming/dvd services.

I believe the decision comes in most part due to the fact that the branding of Qwikster would have been completely new, and the fact that the queue and history would have been separate for each service - which most people found to be pretty annoying.

Since this announcement, Netflix has gained about 10% in the market, and it seems confidence has been restored in their customers as well as their shareholders.

I believe this was a good move. I think what they need to focus on more than anything is their pricing, given that since their recent price increase, that's when they began showing huge losses. If we can get in the ballpark of $10 for streaming+dvd I'll be a happy camper again.

As far as their video game addition to the service, word is there is no set decision yet and that it is to 'be determined'.

who cares netflix sucked bad before the move, their stock fell over 50%. their live streaming content sucks even more.

i canceled my service months ago, they can go kick rocks as far as im concerned

I have been waiting for this . I use to have Netflix. I drop them when they change their policy. I have received several emails asking me to come back with some lame discount offer that barely added up to a dollar. I absolutely refuse to go back until they restore their original service.

I think what bothered me the most was the fact they did not grandfather their old customers to try something new. They just threw us under the bus. Even if they restore the old service and I go back, this will always leave a bad taste in my mouth.

Have not received email offering the return to the original service yet. I think a lot of people, like me dumped Netflix when they unceremoniously dumped us thinking that they were too big to fail. Maybe this is one time that people actually fought back with their pocketbooks and won.

I won't celebrate until I get the email and read the fine print.

I agree with you on that. One bad move after another. Silverlight made it impossible to buffer enough data for smooth streaming. Of course Silverlight blamed Netflix and Netflix blamed Silverlight but either way their streaming quality is very poor.

I never had any problems with silverlight or the netflix data stream. Very rarely was something supposed to be in HD but my stream wouldn't support it.

I left netflix after that price hike, though. Good riddance.

yeah, same here... I find its hard to even pay 8 bucks if the same stuff is available for free on the net anyway. but with newer movies, and great free streams.

Qwikster was a bad bad plan.
If they lower the DVD fee, I may sign up for that service again. My current DVD account expires in 10 days, they have 10 days.

Streaming has been fine for me. It's all we watch. And they have dumped a whole slew of new movies and shows into the mix. SO, I'm riding it out. I still like that service for 8 measly bucks.

I watch stuff though my DVD widget, my phone app, and computer...Very few glitches.

Yay! I never would have thought a company would go back on their idiotic plans. Usually they ignore the customer complaints and press forward. *cough*BankofAmerica*cough*
