In Texas we have a town by that name on Hwy 79, in Milam County. Sadly, it's where the late, great rockabilly singer Johnny Horton [The Battle of New
Orleans (1959), North, To Alaska, and more] was killed in a car accident on November 5, 1960. On a more whimsical note, although not a definition of
the name, is the old timers rendition of how the name for that location was coined.
A husband and wife were travelling across Texas in a covered wagon during the frontier era and stopped to rest for the night. After breaking camp the
following morning the husband turned to his spouse and asked if she'd like to stop and homestead in that area instead of journeying further.
Her indignant response is alleged to have been "My lan'...NO!!! They continued on but the contraction stuck.
