Physics has been highly dependent on the fact that the speed of light is a constant that cannot be exceeded. It appears as though the science books may have to be rewritten, due to this paradigm shifting "discovery". It looks like Einstein's special theory of relativity may be crushed under the weight of this massive discovery.

Particle physicists detect neutrinos travelling faster than light, a feat forbidden by Einstein's theory of special relativity

Scientists at the Gran Sasso facility will unveil evidence on Friday that raises the troubling possibility of a way to send information back in time, blurring the line between past and present and wreaking havoc with the fundamental principle of cause and effect.

The measurement amounts to the neutrinos travelling faster than the speed of light by a fraction of 20 parts per million. Since the speed of light is 299,792,458 metres per second, the neutrinos were evidently travelling at 299,798,454 metres per second.

"When you get such a result you want to make sure you made no mistakes, that there are no nasty things going on you didn't think of. We spent months and months doing checks and we have not been able to find any errors.

The constancy of the speed of light essentially underpins our understanding of space and time and causality, which is the fact that cause comes before effect."

Cause cannot come after effect and that is absolutely fundamental to our construction of the physical universe. If we do not have causality, we are buggered."

Kostelecky said that if the result was verified – a big if – it might pave the way to a grand theory that marries gravity with quantum mechanics, a puzzle that has defied physicists for nearly a century.

This is really amazing. Effect can now precede cause and time travel is possible.

Seems amazing.

There have been threads announcing this information before I believe. However, it is fair to say that while the researchers have spent months checking the result of this experiment to ensure that any data recovered is valid, I think it is a little early to start stating that cause can truely come before effect.

After all , the neutrino may have been traveling faster than light, but consider this... it still arrived at its destination after it was fired. If causality was completely buggered up, then it would have arrived before they even thought the experiment up, let alone fired the neutrino off on its travels.

woo hoo! there is no time, just perception. if you draw a circle the point at which your pencil makes first contact is impossible to find upon the circles completion

One of the first things I thought of when I heard about neutrinos breaking the light barrier was "I wonder if they're going back in time?"

The recent discovery concerning neutrinos will force scientists to reconsider what is usually deemed "impossible" or "paradoxical".

Consider for example the idea where closed time-like curves (via spinning black holes) can be utilized for the process of sending information (or even physical objects) back through time.

If we understand that there's an "information timeline" and a "relativistic timeline" the paradoxes go away. I've been talking about this for a while having experienced retrocausality first-hand: www.abovetopsecret.com...

This has been posted before and all them have had, IMO, a lack of what this may mean for us. I wouldn't jumpt to the conclusion that we can time travel now, just because a particle can. Humans are far more complex. Though this could be the beginning, just wish they wold publish more of their findings somewhere open to public.

This was announced 2 weeks ago. There was a big thread about it. I don't see how neutrinos going faster than light has anything to do with traveling back in time, or sending messages back. They aren't traveling back in time, or they would be detected before they were actually sent.

Not necessarily....Keep in mind that it had to travel a distance of about 450 miles, and it only clocked in at about 60 nanoseconds faster than it would take a light beam.Though it may have moved faster than light speed (C) you still have to take into consideration the distance before proclaiming it would arrive before it was shot out. For instance it takes approximately 8 minutes and 20 seconds for the light of the Sun to reach the Earth. If something arrived from the Sun at 7 minutes.....it still would not have arrived before the lightbeams actually left the Sun because of the great distance. It simply would have arrived a bit before the light beam, which would still be on it's way traveling...while it would have technically traveled back in time...it would not have traveled back in time far enough to get there before the light beam had left.
