Last night I observed a brilliant red sky at about 2am. If I remember correctly this was phenomenon was observed a few nights before the massive earthquake in September. I was unable to take any good pictures of this, but I will try to again tonight if it is present. The sky was so bright it almost appeared to be day time outside. This just struck me as very weird.

I'm not saying I am predicting another earthquake or anything, I am just observing this and wondering if any other Christchurch people observed this?

Well if you have anywhere else to go, like a relative or a friend's out of the city. I'd suggest you go, especially if you feel uneasy, sometimes you just have a feeling that the # will hit the fan.
I'm in the US. I know some people down there, I'll email them ask did they notice.

actually the upper atmosphere did just get a beating from the sun, with reports of unusually brilliant northern lights. Which can extend even outward of true north, I have seen them fill half the sky. And there are red northern lights. I saw them in Oct 2003 when we had had another high in sun activity. They were breathtaking, but explainable and not a sign of bad things to come. more like the result of something that had already happened - aka solar emmissions.

Yes I am leaning towards this as being the most logical explantion, I have never seen an aurora before so have nothing to compare it with. The sight was really quite magnificent!

For those who know Christchurch It was the eastern skies which were lit up.
