The intelligent ones claim theory and not fact and the ones with pseudo-intelligence claim fact and fear monger, that's how it works here.

This is a little off-topic and flaky, but where exactly is all of our online information stored? All of my fb photos, etc.
Could a solar storm destroy all of our online information (ie. the internet)?

Thanks for the info. There is a possibility that the power outages in California and Arizona were from solar flares also.

Solar flares do not cause power outages.
Geomagnetic storms resulting from CMEs can but the K index in North America hasn't really gotten high enough to do so. Northern Europe, being on the nightside, has been much more active.

You are implying that the numerous power outages globally today, the 26th, are purely coincidental and nothing to do with the sun? Despite the severe weather warning?

I live in PA, and I have power.

So... what's going on here?

Since most of the outages occurred many hours before the geomagnetic storm started, yes. Those are unrelated.

Since geomagnetic activity in North America has been light, yes. Those are unrelated.

Power interruptions in Europe (and the UK) since the storming began may, or may not, be attributable to it.

saw what Phage said there

luckily after perusing 11 pages, no one anywhere said the solar flares caused power outages

now, are some of these power outages solar-related? cme-related? or geomagnetic storm related? ahh, yes, semantics

and satellites falling from space? They too are unrelated to current solar activity?
How many power outtages, regardless of how light or strong they may be, would it take to move from coincidence to being a related event?

Was charging a purchase at the corner store earlier - the guy had to run it about 10 times - kept losing the connection. Or something. Came home, found this article:

Massive Sunspot 1302

A highly active region on the Sun threatens to deliver powerful geomagnetic storms over the week ahead. Highly energetic solar eruptions are likely heading in our direction to give Earth’s magnetic field a significant glancing blow!

Over the past few days the new sunspot AR1302 has been incredibly active, hurling massive X-class solar flares into space and it will soon face Earth.

The massive sunspot, many times larger than the Earth (see images below) is expected to increase in size and energy, and is expected to release powerful solar flares, sparking strong geomagnetic storms.

......This can trigger very powerful geomagnetic storms, which can damage satellites in orbit and cause problems for communications and power networks.

No - this does not mean it's the end of the world. But it's MOST interesting to know what affects our planet and how, and what affects us and how.

Keep researching, thinking and learning.

...and if anyone can find evidence showing solar weather can affect Earth weather - PLEASE, post it! ...Common sense says it happens.

Not semantics.
A solar flare and a CME are two different phenomena with different effects.
They are often used interchangeably but they are not.

Update: West Seattle power outages after first blustery blast
September 25, 2011 at 8:40 am | In Delridge, Utilities, West Seattle news | 6 Comments

Thanks to Cluny and Debbie for e-mailing to report a power outage caused by a fallen tree. Seattle City Light‘s status map says it’s affecting at least 27 customers (homes/businesses), in stretches both west and east of the Delridge/Orchard intersection, where Debbie says the signal’s out as a result, and to the south. City Light lists the estimated time of power restoration as 11 am. (Though the wind’s relatively calm at the moment, we have multiple reports of blustery conditions in the 4 am hour, when the tree came down, so this may be the first effect of the storm systems that brought the alert noted here last night.)

9:24 AM UPDATE: Just back from checking it out – adding photos. The entire 4-way intersection of Delridge/Orchard is marked with signs since the signal is out; Orchard/Dumar is closed east of Delridge, since that’s where the City Light crews are working.

The National Weather Service says more blusteriness is on the way.

11:18 AM UPDATE: The City Light map shows two more small outages – one that had been mentioned in comments on our earlier weather report, in the Admiral area, cause “unknown,” and the other further south on Delridge, at Kenyon, listed as “bird/animal”-related.

11:53 AM UPDATE: Just checked the Delridge/Orchard intersection – the traffic signal’s working again, but the road east of Delridge is still closed. Commenter from Admiral says that outage is over too.

EVENING NOTE: The road to the east is fully open again, too.

I lost power for a few hours today in northern michigan. I heard a strange bang...I thought someone hit my truck outside but then I noticed the power was out. I wasn't lightning, it sounded almost like a gunshot.
