If you are paying money to go to an event, don't you think you have the right to speak at that event and have your say? Obviously, peacefully.

No they don't have a right to interrupt the speaker's remarks by shouting him down. What about all of the other people who paid to attend the event? What about their right to hear a message that they paid to hear? It would have been proper for them to ask him questions in a civilized tone after his remarks were concluded, or to debate him in a different venue, but they were there to cause trouble plain and simple.

People do not pay to go to college speeches. Colleges PAY the speakers to come speak with the students money, ergo the students are the one's paying for the speaker to be there with their TUITION!!

If police officers are paid with taxpayer money taxpayers have a right to voice their opinions on how the police conduct themselves.

Let me break it down a little simpler for you. If I hire you to work for me that makes me your boss and I can comment on any of your actions while under my employment (wether good or bad), if you don't like it you can quit and get another job.

Police officers, Paid speakers, even the President all work for THE PEOPLE but it seems as if as soon as they get hired they tend to feel like they are above their bosses. If my boss chastised me i would respectfully listen and try my best to comply with whatever my bosses wishes were or i would....... i know u know whats coming right....... I WOULD QUIT

Please show me where in the constitution you have the right to prevent someone else from exercising their right to freedom of speech!

They could have gathered outside the building where a speech was being given and said whatever they wanted and the police would not have done anything.

Instead, they conspired, as shown by emails, to deprive another person of their right to free speech. Please try to see the difference.

They could rent a room and hold their own press conference and say what ever they want. However if a bunch of KKK conspired to disrupt their speech, then the KKK would be in the wrong.

This was a private speech on private property paid for by the very people who got arrested. If the KKK hired a black man to speak and then heckled him the whole time would you arrest the KKK members or tell the black man to just quit and not put up with it? If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen!

If you are scared of dogs why get a job with animal control.

If the professor that failed them was their speech professor, he had every right to give them a failing grade.
Speech is a two way street. Being a good listener is as important as being a good speaker. If their grades depended upon their participation, then by not following instructions, they got what they deserved academically.
If it wasn't their assignment to just sit there and listen, then it's still up to the professor to pass or fail them. It's his prerogative. Also, by them interrupting the speaker, they were denying the others in the audience their right to listen. I guess there's no such thing as civil discourse anymore.

However, the arrest is not fair. If one is to be arrested by heckling at a public speaking event, then our jails should be overflowing with members of both political parties.

You're saying that the Muslim students association paid for the ambassador from Israel to speak.

Somehow, I doubt that.

The students conspired to deprive another person of their right to free speech. That's it.

All of the students tuition combined pays for all the speakers.

If 2 or 3 students say "lets go protest" that equals a conspiracy.

If one of your ATS friends said "go to this thread and post your opinion" that is considered a conspiracy too, just letting you know.

But that isn't part of their playbook is it? No, they're growing up to be petulant bullies just like their big brothers in Palestine.

Little Brother Palestinian Student: We don't like what you have to say, so we won't let you say it. There will be no debate, we'll just shout you down so nothing productive can be gained.

Big Brother Hamas: Do what we say or we'll bomb your neighborhoods and kill your children on school buses.

The Palestinians have proven that they have no interest in debating issues and eventually coming to a peaceful settlement. EVERY time a deal has been close, the Palestinian government pushes away from the table and launches a new round of violence. They are following Mohammed's example of dealing deceitfully with their enemies the Jews. He would be so proud.

Your post was filled with racism and defined the exact reason why these students were arrested. You speak of Palestinians and the Palestinian government as if these students are direct representatives of them. These students were and are AMERICANS. You judge them like you know them personally but in all actuality all you are doing is stereotyping them.

These are American college students that attend an American university in America! Further more they all are honor roll students. You seem to hate them because their ancestors are from Palestine and because their political views differ from your own.

Have you ever been to Palestine? Please give me one example of Palestinians interfering with or personally affecting your life. How can you hate people who you have never even met that have never done anything personally to you? Thats like hating Tiger Woods because he cheated on his wife and then labeling all golfers "no -good cheating bastards".

American is an idea not a race. Americans are many different races. Some are even (gasp) of Palestinian decent.

BS. There's no racism there at all. That just goes to show how shallow your defense of these morons is; you go right to the race card. Pffft.

I couldn't give a crap who their ancestors are; they are employing "Hamas-lite" tactics, bullying to get their way, and that is what I don't like.

Sooooooo, do you think THIS heckler should be arrested too?

Heckling may be rude or annoying but to be arrested for it and end up with a criminal record is just absurd!

I will not beat around the bush, i believe these students were arrested because they were of the Muslim faith and of Palestinian descent.

ProphecyPhD,

Yes, I think that heckler should be arrested IF:

There is a law against it where they are, AND subject to the condition that anyone wants to prosecute, especially since the President will say "Hey, don't do that it'll make me look bad, and things are tough enough as they are." Besides, if the President doesn't want that person arrested he just gives an instant Presidential pardon.

The law may not be the same, and the circumstances are definitely different. (Besides, one heckler? No conspiracy. Also he may not have the record that the MSU had.)

I don't think this example proves much.

A question I have here is this:

I have never been on a jury so I don't know, but if even ONE person doesn't agree to the verdict, don't they have to keep going? Was there not ONE single person of the 12 that would stand up for what's right?

If you can't get arrested for heckling the President of the United States while in America and on national television then no one should be arrested for heckling PERIOD, especially for heckling a foreigner at a private function on a college campus.

ProphecyPhD,

Thanks for expanding your thought for me.

If I sound simplistic here, its just because I'm thinking it out as I go. You get arrested if you break a law. One thing that being arrested means is that you lose your freedom of movement, you're "taken into custody."

If no one could be arrested for heckling, then how could a heckler be removed? You couldn't force him to leave if he was breaking no law. But every place I know of has a "disturbing the peace" law, by which hecklers and protesters can be removed. Yes, the Supremes have put some limits on those to accomodate free speech, but the law is still valid.

California also has a law to prevent the disruption of a meeting, that's the one they were charged under in this case. Nobody's shown the law to be unconstitutional yet. I suppose they'll give it a try in this case. Will they win? Who knows? It's been a while since I've briefed a constitutionality case. I don't think I'll try it here.
