Is Australia preparing to move its focus on war from the Middle East to North Korea and other asian neighbours by purchasing up to $450M worth of stealth cruise missiles? Will regional neighbours consider the purchase a threat or just an badly needed update of weapons?

Australia was not threatening its northern neighbours by purchasing sophisticated new long-range missiles, Foreign Minister Alexander Downer said.

The government said it would spend between $350 million and $450 million on new Stealth Cruise missiles.

Indonesia's chief foreign affairs spokesman Marty Natalegawa said while defence purchases were a decision for Australia's government, Canberra could not expect its regional neighbours to react kindly.
