What I don't like about this one is the location. This location is not in any recent swarms. I am in no way scared as I do live in Tn. but don't think I am not aware.
Just sayin'. A 5 or more would do A LOT of damage.

To illustrate what the original poster was saying - the area of this earthquake, and New Madrid, MO is almost exactly in the center from the Colorado / DC earthquakes from August 23rd.

Bare with me, I spent 5 minutes editing this graphic and got the data from USGS website:

The exact midway point it basically the 37 degrees N / 91 degrees W. As you can see, this is almost exactly where this quake was.

I'm not saying there's a connection to a comet or anything, or planetary alignments, I just thought the midway point seeing this was interesting, particularly since it is almost one month to the day and people are freaking out about 9/23 tomorrow/later today.

Fair enough. I totally understand the feeling. Nothing personal, I just hate to see people get swarmed when they present something new to us for consideration.

Wow you guys are merciless.

Doesn't the New Madrid zone really not have many quakes of that size? That would make it noteworthy in my mind.

Thanks for posting OP.

I agree. As someone who lives on the New Madrid fault, I appreciate this being brought to my attention. Maybe it's not the end of the world, but that doesn't mean it should be ignored.

Also, for those who do not know, quakes in this area are magnified because of the soil here. This photo shows the same strength quake being considerably larger than one in another area. Now imagine an 8.0 instead.

Thank you OP. Now I will keep a closer eye on the activity here.

Thanks for some positive feed back, also thanks for the person who made that awesome map showing the quake locations. Great Job!

OP didn't say it was the end of the world, just stated there was an earthquake and the coincidence of the area of the quake. Give the guy a break geez. He didn't say mega quake, didn't say we're all gonna die so cut him some slack.

I also don't understand why this is in general conspiracy

It might be an active fault but that is unusual to have 3.6 over there.

3.6 near Madrid? You do know some areas in the New Madrid REGULARLY have 3.0ish EQ's? Sometimes, they have a dozen or more in one day!

I use to live in St. Louis, Spanish Lake area back in 94. I didn't ever feel an earthquake. No one has said there weren't any earthquakes, but in St. Louis it is pretty rare. Yes people can sleep through less than a 4 or 5 mag, but those that don't feel it normally or ever would get spooked by it. Also, since the last couple years seems to be the years of the 100 year storms, isn't it a bit possible that the heavy activity with big earthquakes and storms could quite possibly be a hint of a 100 year earthquake? Didn't another poster say something about 1812? That would make it a 200 year earthquake. When was the last time the states had a major earthquake? '93? There is a swarm around southern to mid California, but not much seismic activity along the New Madrid. I know some of you are having fun, no problem with that, but for a short bit there it was just people having a go at the OP who was just trying to bring an unusual event in his/her area.

A 3.6 is a good thing. It has released pressure vs allowing pressure to build and form a larger quake.

A natural pressure relief valve so to speak.

Which is a good thing....

Probably a good thing the New Madrid is letting out small quakes, and not building up pressure for a massive 9.0 quake like in the 1800's when the mississippi ran backwards and sand gysers blew out of the ground , and the quakes lasted for months and im not talking small quakes either. I'm still going to be prepared for any kind of catastrophe in my area, which is about 150 miles from the New madrid fault. get your Bug Out bags ready, LOL
Thanks OP for bring this to my attention, some of us ATS'ers live in this area, and appreciate this post S + F, and i will keep my attention on this subject.

feeling earthquakes in St. Louis depends a lot on where you live. I live just down the road from you, near the Sinks, and I have been feeling the Arkansas fracking quakes enough to call the news and email USGS.
Did not notice this one at all.

Never said it was usual or unusual, I was just telling people to take it easy. The guy is just informing people of a quake and people were jumping his case about it
