Britain to be hit by SNOW in October... forecasters warn

I love cold winters - they should be cold, and snowy - not damp and grey. Since moving from london 9 years ago to westcountry, the last few years of snow and ice have been really lovely. I feel for those people who aren't prepared, for the old folks who don't use their winter fuel payment to keep warm in the cold snap, and anyone who dies as a result of sliding their car into a tree in the ice - but our problem in the UK is lack of preparedness. Myself included in the cold fortnight last year my boiler broke down and even with both open fires going, it was a struggle to keep warm.

This year - new boiler installed in August and woodburner being installed today!

And as for average temperatures, they are just that average - too often we only look at the short term climate change, ie over the last 10 or 20 years, you really need to go back much much further than that to get any sort of indication of what an average is. As if oft said on forums such as this our world is ever changing, always has been and always will be.

The way the government reacts to snow over here it's a good job Hitler never had a snow machine... we'd be speaking German by Tuesday. It's so stupid though because last year here it snowed about a day the radio guy went nuts and declared war on everyone haha.

I dont think this is anything to worry about - weather fluctuates like this all the time.

The only reason it seems so bizarre is because of the (fairly) recent advances in media coverage and how info can be so readily shared so quickly. And we, as humans, try to catalogue things into patterns and "make sense" of events all around us. And with sites like ATS where people mistakenly believe HAARP controls earthquakes, volcanoes, weather, the bowels of the Chinese, etc - people will assign such "out of place" weather patterns to something that lets them explain it.

I'm sure 1-2 hundred years ago people were "stunned" when the same weather patterns happened.

Well we are due for the next ice-age so a little bit of snow training will help.

I see some have already declared that this years low temps are due to Global Warming.

What are you Global Warmista's going to do when the Ice age does roll in? convert and say you were never really convinced?

My prediction is that the Ice-Age is imminent and will happen in our lifetime.

I really want to see the look on Al Gore's stupid face, so the sooner the better.

Good I really hope it does, I need some good ol delayed trains to get out of going to uni and work and basically becoming a hermit that is on ATS all day. Bring on the blizzards!

Dunno about snow, though it'd be very unusual indeed if we didn't see snow fall in some parts of Britain in October*, but September will be ending (and October beginning) very warm for most parts of the country. Indeed, could be one of the best spells of weather of the whole year - not that you'd know it from the nonsense the media have been spouting!

This time next week though, the headlines will all be about 'Indian summers' and 'record heat' ......

(btw the Met Office have (once again) made it quite clear that they are NOT behind these snow forecasts.)

As for this coming winter, I'm not expecting it to be as cold as last December, though hopefully it won't all be quite as warm and frost-free as last February.

It can snow on the 6th of November for me...Anything before that would be just plain weird. Imagine trying to get the kids bonfire started in the snow.
Mind you it usually drizzles rain anyway..

The UK does not experience sub-zero temperatures. The record low in London I believe is 24^F. Northern Ireland gets maybe 15^F at coldest.

England -26.1oC (-15oF) 1982

London -21oC (-5.8oF)
Edinburgh -17.4oC (0.7oF)

Belfast -14.9oC (5.2oF)

Great, I've just moved up't North. So wil be experiencing my first real winter in the UK ever.

But as I've been to South Georgia (in Antarctica, not North America). A Geordie winter holds no fear for me.

The only frightening thing about Geordie winters are all the orange girls who manage to wade through 100 mile an hour gusts to the nightclub wearing nowt but a belt and their vagazzles.

It was below -10C here in the HIghlands of Scotland for 8 days and nights running last winter. Which was completely unheard of.

It even hit -18C a couple of nights. Which again, previous that the coldest I have ever known it here was -4 or -5.
