It sounds like a pretty simple attack being carried out by a botnet. Someone at your place of employment has downloaded some malicious code or introduced it by some other means. Your company probably uses some sort of VOIP system and that explains the phones. Tell your boss to download Wireshark (free at wireshark.com) and start packet sniffing, although I would guess that your boss probably has no idea what to look for.

That's not really going to help unless the boss man knows how to configure a SPAN port on a switched network and understands TCP/IP packets.

Have you considered the whole thing was initiated in house?

Well that's why I said the boss probably wouldn't know what to look for, but Wireshark has some really good tutorials on their website. I was just making conversation, because clearly the company needs to hire a good network security person to fix the problem, and then invest in software that will prevent such a situation in the future.

Quick update...

We installed a tracing device today, and they may have found where this crud is coming from. It is NOT a virus. Some one was ticked off at the boss man and decided to start an all out war. I shouldn't laugh..but

I'm sure we will. I just heard the email is fixed. Now if they could just get the phones to stop ringing we'll be back in business...er.. maybe just keep them from ringing so much?

I would like to believe that in one of those phone calls, there is a real customer that just needs his computer fixed. Poor guy

That happened a few times today. I had to answer it EVERY time it rang. I'll be so glad when this is over. I'll be hearing phones ringing in my sleep for a month now..

I wouldn't be afraid of hearing a phone ringing, I would be afraid of Bananaphone.

That isn't an all out war... it is actually just some run of the mill attack that any 15 year old could pull off with a little bit of an imagination. It is also very easy to defend against or prevent all together. The fact that it even happened in the first place tells me that your company is a joke, so I hope that you guys don't deal in ecommerce because your customers should have a lot to worry about.
