The cage should be considered a safety net for younger fighters rather than as something nasty , there's now no chance at all for them to leave the ring and land on the floor . Have seen a few youngsters leave the ring in other places and feel a cage is a far better option.

When being taught at places like this. Or any martial arts place, you are taught that fighting is a last resort. To use your brain first and your fists last. It teaches you to be prepared should there be no other choice but to defend yourself, and let's be honest. This is a crappy world, sometimes people do end up having to defend themselves... Say, against a mugger. These classes, they encourage you to use your head, not your fists. But they also prepare you for the rare event in which, using your head does not cut it. So, no, I do not think it encourages more violence. Just as kids in these classes are taught, it encourages them to escape dangerous situations using their heads....and never to fight, unless there is absolutely no other way out.

Ok..You've successfully changed my mind...I can't argue your logic...and what you write makes a lot of sense..

Thank you for explaining it so well.

Many are completely over blowing the situation. As a boxing, kick-boxing and MMA fan I can tell you that this is definetely not as dangerous as the article makes it out to seem. In fact the article is more so a propaganda peace.

The children are forbidden from striking and only use grappling and wrestiling techniques. The cage itself is safer then a boxing ring as it prevents them from falling off the canvas and they are supervised by a certified referee. I would allow my own children to do the same. The most disturbing thing in this image is the drunk, primitive crowd who are less into the science and more into the action of what can be an extremely interesting sport.

To give the full qoute:- "Unlike adult contestants, they are not, in theory, allowed to punch, kick, knee or elbow each other during the competitions, but the rules are inevitably broken."

Who is being misleading now? did you have a dog in that race or perhaps your children follow the same path. Always someone trying to defend a practise that it is impossible to defend.

Before you state anything else, i would actually support martial arts for children as it has morals and codes of ethics that are not broken.

I am appalled by this, has our society really stooped this low? I know tv is bad but this is going too far. I would not want my 8 year old even near a wring where at the end of each round some bimbo walks around with her backside on plain view let alone the cage fighting aspect of this.

Perhaps i am being a prude(i dont think so) being a decent parent is my answer to that.

How is this different to when we all wrestled with our friends when we were kids?

Lighten up, they're just grappling and no one gets seriously hurt. I'd rather have my kids doing this than drugs or watching porn.

And the term is Mixed Martial Arts or MMA...not cage fighting.

I was in martial arts as a late teen, so i understand the aspects of what it taught. There is nothing wrong with practicing martial arts, the problem is when the ignorant bullies discover that you practice martial arts. It is a way of pacifism unless attacked approach and it is good for when the bullies strike, and when the revolution starts for our country. I think Martial Arts, and Airsofting with actual heft weapons and gear, are a good thing that every human should learn just in case. Now i don't agree with the parents, cheering is one thing, demeaning a child is another, and if George Carlin couldn't say his spiel about the Seven Words You Can't Say on Television, harlots should not be allowed to prance around in front of children scantily clad, at least not until around fourteen or fifteen then their doing it on their own anyway.

The only sports I really follow is combat sports and this whole thing is a bit misleading, all they are doing is grappling and not striking each-other, basically there wrestling around.

And I cant find a vid of these actual fights, but from what i have seen and read I have done much worse when i was there age with my friends on the street or on the grass just messing and wrestling around. And once when I was around that age I remember one of them took it to serious and cheated when we were wrestling/fighting and grabbed a rock and proceeded to hit me in the head with it while he was on top, till I shook him off and got on top of him that is.

People are blowing this way out of proportion, I have been hurt way more when I was a kid just by wrestling with my little brother at home on the carpet then these kids have in that ring, in fact it is way more save then what me and my brother did at least they don't have to worry about landing on any table edges with there head or any number of household things that usually are in the way, or what I got up when when I was a kid. At least they have a padded ring so when they hit the floor not much will happen in terms of damage, and it is a lot more save then being slammed on concrete that's for sure.

However the venue there going on about is all wrong by trying to get it all glitsy and hip and showy it is all wrong, and kids that age if there going to be fighting need to learn the basics before they step in a arena, horsing around is all cool and all once in a while, but all fighting is settled in the mind before the competition ever starts.

I would prefer they go more the traditional route and even take a Karate class and learn some basics in striking and grappling then just letting then tussle to get them used to it, because they can get used to doing all the wrong things in a fight, and that's why practice was invented. They can even go to the regular karate or jiu jitsu or wrestling tournaments that kids have, then this more showy form.

Really i am all for mma fights, but I have no interest of watching kids try to emulate there idols in the sport in exactly the same way, and in front of a bunch of parents to make it look more like the real thing with the light and glits and all that. Really a mat, and a referee in there dojo and teachers is all that is needed, with a parent or two sitting on the bleachers once in a while.

Kids spectacles are for kids, i see no point in trying to make it like the real thing or like they see it on the tube, if they want to do that let them do it latter in life when they are a bit older.

If the kids are pumped up about it and want to train and fight then theres nothing wrong here. Builds character. Women parading around? Wtf ever been at the beach with your kids? Kids watch worse things on tv than a woman in a bikini holding up a sign. Enough with hypocrisy! A country involved in at least three wars, ruled by free criminals while millions of poor go to jail for an ounce of weed is now blathering about false morality. Enough!

Outrageous... but the politician and upperclasses in this country force their kids to play rugby, which isn't violent in the least................

WoW , much angst

I must be a bad parent then , both my daughters have gloved up and stepped into the ring against female and male opponents , full contact no head gear . They train hard , and in their opinion and their parents opinions they were both physically and mentally ready for the challenge , nothing forced at all.

Good thing it wasn't in the Uk , I guess I'd be hung drawn and quartered judging by the comments in the news rags and a few posts.

I got 3 words for you > Discipline Strength Courage < my girls have each in fair measure , what they don't have is the fear of not knowing their own capabilities. They know what it's like to get hit and give a hit , both of which are important lessons imho.

My kids are not bullies , get good grades at school and they don't sit around wasting time on TV and other trash . As a parent , maybe you should see if your child is interested in one of the disiplines , best thing anyone can do .

And just to add > I got no fear of the PC crowd.

A human being shouldn't be any way and a majority of people shouldn't be able to decide what anyone else can do. That's the thing with laws, it's just a majority of people controlling others.

The only problem I have with this is the venue..

It was in the local Labour club and was on the same billing as Adult fights (in fact, they were the only kids)..

Having a bunch of jeering adults who have all been drinking cheer this on is what disturbs me.

The actual sport itself or the "lack" of safety gear is not an issue for me. I used to do Karate when I was 7 and it was full-contact without any kind of safety gear. The only difference is that the Tournaments and fights we had were properly organised kids events, not billed in with Adults with a crowd that has been drinking in a working mans club.

That is a VERY VALID POINT...

Seems odd if these folks are trying to instill discipline and focus in self defense to have it paraded in a drinking environment with a bunch of rowdy adults..screaming at them..

First one with an every dad must have cool "My kid can beat up your kid" bumper sticker / t -shirt wins..lol

I go to one of these just to admire the freak show.. watching little tykes pummel each-other into pablum.. as proud parents cheer, I shout "kill kill kill!!!", oh yeah.. who could resist? It'll all end once some kid ends up dead or paralyzed.. there will be hearings, speeches, laws, charges filed, parents in jail.. all that.. as the govt saves our morality..

BTW.. a kid fighting tip..where legal, bet on the kid being vetted by the Army recruiter..
