Former Conservative Party official, jailbird and millionaire author Jeffrey Archer has been linked. So has oil magnate Ely Calil. Now the creme of the British establishment is bracing to find out who else might be named in the rapidly escalating affair of Sir Mark Thatcher and the African coup.
Simon Mann, leader of the failed Equatorial Guinea coup, was last night facing up to 10 years in jail after being found guilty of attempting to possess dangerous weapons by a court in Zimbabwe.
But one man finds himself facing questions that grow harder with each passing day. For Ely Calil, owner of a 12m Palladian mansion just off Chelsea's Kings Road, is a man under siege. The notoriously private Lebanese multimillionaire is accused of being at the centre of the plot to overthrow the president of Equatorial Guinea, a dirt-poor, oil-rich state on Africa's west coast.
From: News.com.au: Thatcher to appeal court order
November 25, 2004
LAWYERS representing Mark Thatcher are to lodge an appeal against a court ruling ordering the son of the former British prime minister to answer questions from Equatorial Guinea on an alleged coup plot, one of his lawyers said today.
The Cape High Court yesterday ruled that the son of Margaret Thatcher must answer questions put by Malabo prosecutors, upholding a decision by the South African justice minister.
