We all knew it was comming, we just did't know it would start now.

Suspended animation has been a part of science fiction for as long as I can remember reading or watching movies. It was always portrayed as something far out in the future.

I just never thought about when the research into actually making it real would start. I guess the future really is now !

Seems Gabrielle Giffords was the first, or at least the first high profile, test case. That probably helped with FDA approval...

Rhee is a former battlefield surgeon for the U.S. military who researched suspended animation for 15 years before he used a related cooling procedure on Giffords while he and a surgical team worked to repair the bullet wound in her brain.

Oh wow! The implications this will have on medicine are astronomical. This doesn't appear to be useful for long-distance space travel, though.

I really hope this will take off and save lives.

I hope these facilities would have a massive security force, god forbid we have frozen human trafficking.

Oh wonderful. Another advance n medical science which will be available only to the rich and powerful (or politically expedient).

I know that is a cynical thing to say, and that eventually it has to be available to anyone - but the caveat "who can afford it" seems eternally to follow such developments.

Although the article title says this is "approved" they fail to mention that it is "approved for Phase II human trials" which is not the same thing as expecting your grand kids to benefit from the procedure.

I find it someone curious that Dr. Rhee is singled out as the genius behind this....

Forget the "Posturpedic" for a good nights sleep.

this doesn't sound terribly revolutionary. i know they've used a similar procedure for awhile to repair brain aneurisms. freeze the body, stop the heart, drain the blood out, repair the ruptured artery, then put the blood back in and restart the heart.

The guy was in Iraq. It's just another example that despite how violent mankind is, how warlike he can be, war is a means of progress and advancement. It motivates us to do things.
