The point is, whatever you say in response, is reasonable and appropriate if situation calls for it.

That's a loaded statement, my friend.

Some people's interpretation of what's "reasonable and appropriate" in any given situation might be very extreme. Everyone handles things differently.

Get away from them as soon as possible

Do you respond with anger or peace?

Peace

Ralphy...break it down....why are they being mean. First look inside yourself....are you being needy, demostrative, emotional...people generally don't agree with that.

Second, look at them...are they obtrusive, materialistic, egotistic...

Well then you can figure out your strategy......

I think you can take it from there.

Peace to you Ralphy!

Exactly. the fact that everyone handles things differently makes it "reasonable" and to some degree "appropriate" as to how someone will tend to react, was what I meant to say.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a peaceful as a harmless meditating dog.

Thanks Gypsy for the reply.

You often hear people say that you should deal with nasty people with kindness and compassion.
That is like praising them for their wrongfulness.

When your dog chews up your new shoes, are you going to stroke him and tell him what a good boy he is? Not likely.

The best way to deal with mean people is not to deal with them. Mean people want you to react, so don’t. By reacting, you are playing into their hands. They should be brushed aside, ignored. Don’t give them the time of day.

“One day a man came up to Buddha and spat in his face. Buddha, slowly wiped of the spit with his shawl and asked, “Do you have anything more to say?” The man was not ready for this question, and ashamed he ran away.

That night the man could not get to sleep, because he realized that he had actually offended an enlightened person. The next morning he came back and fell in front of Buddha on his knees. Again Buddha looked at him and asked, “Do you have anything else to say”. The man was completely puzzled, “Yesterday I offended you and you didn’t get mad, today I am begging for your forgiveness and you are not happy. Why?!” Buddha looked at him with his peaceful smile and said, “Because I am not your Slave”.

I've noticed that if you're completely respectful to the others and honest with yourself, you can handle any situation with grace.
