IBM's Watson proved to a national audience that the computer system can handily defeat Jeopardy champions in a game show. Now the 100-year-old tech giant is on a mission to demonstrate that Watson is the Next Big Thing for industries ranging from call centers to government security. First on the list is health care. On Monday IBM announced that health insurance company Wellpoint had agreed to use the Watson system to provide doctors with more up-to-date information and possible solutions.

Skynet takeover around the corner ? E.R. medical mishaps because even supercomputers are fallible? time will tell-

Watson is an artificial intelligence computer system capable of answering questions posed in natural language, developed in IBM's DeepQA project by a research team led by principal investigator David Ferrucci. Watson was named after IBM's first president, Thomas J. Watson.

In 2011, as a test of its abilities, Watson competed on the quiz show Jeopardy!, in the show's only human-versus-machine match-up to date. In a two-game, combined-point match, broadcast in three Jeopardy! episodes February 14–16, Watson beat Brad Rutter, the biggest all-time money winner on Jeopardy!, and Ken Jennings, the record holder for the longest championship streak (75 days).

IBM's touted super computer watson will be used for the very first time other than entertainment hijinks as was seen earlier this year on jeopardy.I surely do not see this as positive news for our near future.no,never, you say?

I am not talking some type of A.I. takeover the likes as what was seen in the terminator movies or maybe the matrix movies, although it must be said,it is a probability not impossible.

What worries me more than anything at least for our present situation & time period is that this computer "A.I."
is capable of replacing humans in many different areas of employment,as if we needed anymore negatives in that category!

I don't know about you but speaking for myself,I am not comfortable putting my life & trust relaying solely on a machine.I know,i know..you may say that society relies on machines everyday,in all kinds of matters & situations but not like this, not of this magnitude.

Don't get me wrong, this could very well save lives, improve data retrieval greatly but I still have to let my imagination wander thinking of all the negative outcomes as well.

What is your take on this?

Here is an additional thread on this subject: IBM "Watson" Demonstration on Jeopardy is a Fraud
I thought it was rather odd that Watson missed such a easy answer.
