Photos: NASA's Twin Satellites to Shed Light on the Moon

A pair of spacecraft lifted off from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida on Saturday, carrying with it instruments to study the moon in unprecedented detail.

NASA's twin lunar Gravity Recovery and Interior Laboratory is the first spacecraft designed to measure the gravity of the moon, and determine its precise makeup all the way down to the core.

"GRAIL and many other exciting upcoming missions make clear that NASA is taking its next big leap into deep space exploration, and the space industry continues to provide the jobs and workers needed to support this critical effort," said NASA Administrator Charles Bolden.

NASA launched the near identical probes - named Grail-A and Grail-B - aboard a relatively small Delta II rocket to save money.
