Ehh?
My avatar is of a zombie crashing through ATS...you can of course get many meaning from it, but ultimately my take on it is...zombies are cool, and world war Z is coming out next year, whoot

However, I am not trying to suggest zombies are real....
Or are they...

Could I just make one point.....
Its about NASA's terminology regarding comets....
Calling Elenin "Wimpy" 2km...
So a 4 km+ would be "abit less wimpy".........
Then just a third more would be
...oh yeah, "the PT extinction event comet"... Just stick to the numbers NASA, less of the kindergarten terminology.

Using the numbers if it were to be a slam dunk it's a 30% die off.
Now you see why i was chucked off the official Elenin Facebook group
they hate the numbers and....detail.

Is it breaking up or not - I don't know because there are so many conflicting opinions.

No there's not, there's only 2.

Either it is.

Or

......

wait for it.....

........

It is'nt.

A spherical object of diameter 2km has a volume of 4.2 cubic km.
A spherical object of diameter 4km has a volume of 16.8 cubic km.
A spherical object of diameter 5.3km (1/3 more than 4) has a volume of 29.6 cubic km.

Yes, there's a pretty good difference between 2km and 5.3km, 7 times the mass. Now, feel free to calculate the difference in kinetic energy using a density of your choice.

Numbers.

Not that it matters since Elenin (or what's left of it) will not impact Earth. But if it did it would not be pleasant.

I suppose it depends on what you call proof. Can you provide 100% proof that your parents are really your parents?

No,i guess i cant,just a birth certificate,or unless i got a DNA test.
But id rather go with my parents word.

Have you seen "Elenin" Phage?

I don't believe them.
Now what?

No. I haven't seen Elenin.
I haven't seen Paris either (France or Hilton).

Well do you have reasons for not believing him?
I think reasons should matter.

Why not believe Leonid Elenin?
Why not believe Rob McNaught?
Why not believe Michael Mattiazzo?
Why not believe any of the astronomers who have seen and photographed Elenin?

Why should I believe his parents and not them?

You're forgetting the in between possibilities. It could fragment and some of those fragments could strike several parts of the earth at once causing world wide devastation, not enough to wipe out all life, but enough to break our society into a tatters.

Also, it could stay relatively together, but pass close enough to rip some of our atmosphere away, causing world wide devastation that takes decades or centuries to wipe us out and all out ensuing chaos on earth.

So it's not a who cares there's nothing we can do. It's more, those of us who prepare for the less than immediate all out destruction will be relatively alright and those ostriches who bury their heads in the sand will be crying for their mommies to save them...

So NASA claims that this comet which they call Elenin is disintegrating?
I wondering if NASA will get any photo's of this or can we see this comet with a telescope?

Well that depends on what you consider doomsday. I'm sure that the couple of hundred thousand people that died in the tsunami that hit indonesia would agree it was doomsday. I'm sure the people of Japan would agree also.

There is always doomsday coming. If you prepare as best you can without going overboard based on the predictions of doomsdays here at ATS, you will be best off as you can when the doomsday that comes to your area inevitably comes....

I have honestly thought about this. The best answer i can come up with is that i have seen 100% proof of things in my life that don't exist. What i have found is that life is all about perception and perception is not truth. In the end chances are you were correct but if you take a look at the last two years KANSAS WENT BYE BYE! I dont wanna not be prepared.

Merely an observation and minor irritant in terminology and I don't know if its gonna hit... I'm airing on isn't and have my Newtonian and Camera set up ready for it... Its just my geography thats against me at the moment... Rainy CLOUDY Wales.

Well lets do a little what if numbers ....
av. 400 megatons Impact
48,768 Km Crater Radius (earth toast)
14,630 Km Depth(Completely Toast)
0.5 Km Rim height
0.9 Km Rubble pile in the centre after the dust settles.
actually scratch the die off we'd be screwed
but then theres the trajectory..... these numbers would be greatly reduced as in the past impacts.
p.s Meteor Crater was my model. For those currious heres a Accurate Guide rather than my ramblings....

You can't believe what you know is false, but then again the only thing that you can know is that your consciousness exists. So the only thing that that would apply to was if you believed that you didn't exist...

Velocity = mass * acceleration
This is simply not so! The equation you are thinking about is:
Force = mass * acceleration
No applied force, no change in velocity.

Action/reaction.
What does that have to do with fragmentation?

Latest science says it does appear to have broken up. Even its discoverer Leon Elenin has commented on its break up.

Because the pieces are in the vacuum of space and the forces upon the comet are unchanged, they are not, essentially, changing direction, slowing down, speeding up or anything similar. The comet is just becoming softer and fuzzier as moves on its original orbital trajectory.

Not at all.
Velocity = mass * acceleration... so less mass because is breaking up, then less velocity. Simple physics.

Actually, it is F=Ma where F is force. That is unless you do velocities in kilogram-meters per second squared. The rest of us do velocities in meters per second.
