Coca-Cola challenges state legislation in court

THE Territory government has said a multi national soft drink company threatened to help the Opposition crush the container deposit legislation if Labor did not do it themselves.

Yesterday the Government confirmed that at a meeting last year between Coca Cola Amatil and a senior minister, the company "indicated that unless the NT Government abandoned cash for container legislation, they would be approaching the CLP to discuss how they might help them oppose the bill".

I disagree, why should coke be forced to pay for the poor in the society? The govt is selectively taxing an industry to pay towards bad life decisions

coke doesnt pay
the cans are depostited at recycling depots owned privatley or by places like scouts and sold for scrap or recycled

Another sad example of Big Corporations flexing financial muscles to get their own way. I hate the stuff and refuse to drink anything with secret recipes and 9 spoons of sugar anymore but it does go to show just how nasty big business is. I remember deposit money on glass lemonade bottles as a kid and was most thrilled to be able to take them back to the store and get money for sweeties. And aluminium is quite a valuable thing, when compared to the costs of mining bauxite and processing it.
