Many technology components are now coming into place in order to realize the concept of cultured meat. This includes a cell source that is possible to use, several alternative processes to turn these cells into muscle cells for meat, and nutrients free of animal components which can be produced from sunlight and carbon dioxide.

Source

I can see the obvious benefits of this sort of breakthrough and implementation of our food source but let me ask you..How would you feel about cloned meat?knowing your food source is being completely created within a lab?

I don't know about you but I for one,do have many issues with this.
the only immediate benefit I see with this is less harm, discomfort and complete mistreatment of all the animals that are kept in disgusting, cruel housing.for this reason alone I'd back this up in a heartbeat but I could say with 100% surety becoming vegan would be that much easier of a change.

if they can grow a prime rib roast, i'll give it a shot.

but i wouldn't expect much and why eat a fake burger?

the chinese can make vegetarian anything that tastes great.

growing meats for consumption doesn't make sense.

growing a functioning organ is a much better thing to concentrate on.

there are a few threads already on this around.

The only meat I touch is directly from farmers whose cattle EAT real GRASS. The day I can't purchase decent meat is the day I turn Vegetarian or Vegan.

Anything commercialized, I don't touch.

I saw this being done in labs about 10 years ago. Hoping it hits the commercial market to decrease animal suffering caused as a result of the meat industry. As a vego I would even give it a go as long as the meat is not grown with brain capabilities.

lol! had to play the suffering card, didn't ya!

just kidding,

they will never get it right. taste, texture, eye appeal is what people want.

soilent green is what you will get.

i've eaten vegetarian shrimp, abalone, crab, fish, beef, pork, chix, and lamb, great stuff.

looks real too.

so i don't get it, unless it's for the fast food burger places.

arby's used to have real meat, single muscle roasts, they were great!

i wouldn't touch this grown stuff with a 10ft tongue.

I don't know why but this makes me uneasy. But I guess after years of eating hormone laden chickens, cows and other animals is it such a surprise that just parts of the animal could be "grown"?

This reminded me of two quotes. One from "judge dredd" the movie... "Eat recycled food; It's good for the environment, and okay for you."

and one from Samuel Butler "Man is the only animal that can remain on friendly terms with the victims he intends to eat until he eats them."

Call me paranoid but if they can genetically produce meat couldn't they genetically "tweak" it to have almost any side effect they wanted? I hope not but this grown meat concept sounds suspiciously like cloneing to me.

Consider a long space journey to say...oh, mars. you can either pack a bunch of really crappy MREs, or take along a few cows...or have the facilities to grow meat and yum.

growing meat will solve many problems, especially if done cheaply and without any health consequences (well, beyond eating meat...the norm)...from ending world starvation, to allowing for many meat farms to be reclaimed back to nature (some ranchers of course won't like that, but that is the nature of progress), etc...there are tons of advantages of finally growing meat

Also, consider this...grow realistic meat, you also grow realistic leather...and no more people moaning about using cowhide or whatnot...peta eating steaks and wearing head to toe leather, etc.

I just hope the taste, texture, etc is equal or even superior to current meat...and think of all the different tastes you could make...a chickensteak, a porkrabbit, Bacon flavored beef, etc. (dreaming about the bacon beef hybrid)

Yes, that is an advantage actually
they can tweak it to be 100% lean, no fat, hell, they could tweak it enough to make it near health food, giving you loads of vitamins and such...pills in 20 years may be in the form of bacon strips...

Also, this research must be progressed. this is a step forward in mass producing spare parts for humans...this is a in...if this is allowed, and it doesn't fall under the reproductive cloning issues, then yes, a new body can be grown through the advancement of this process. and they will make the mistakes so medical facilities don't have to.

Does this remind anyone else of the Japanese Poop Burger thread?

American version?

I did not read the article, like I usually do...

Does it mention where they are getting the materials to create this meat?

ya, so grow them some burgers?

lol!

growing meat doesn't make sense because it has a short shelf life, probably less good stuff than other things

even protein and expensive.

why even go there when there are alternatives already?

As long as its safe and healthy its a good move. I mean dont ANY FEEL BAD eating Live animals? Just because some feel the top of the food chain is humans.......

I have thought of flavored chips not potato but chips with flavor of many varieties fruits, veggies and some meats. W/ mineral and vitamins in them that will help make many more healthy avoiding all the injections into the meats to make them weigh more and produce more flesh per animal. These chips can be shared globally in areas where food is scarce bringing hidden populations up to standard.

Growing meat en mass is definitely where we are headed, factory farming and all the ills it creates will be gone. Along with the new and inventive ways of growing veg and fruit with LED's etc(thread on ATS about it) much more land will be available and the price of meats should drop dramatically. Of course we already have the means to end world hunger...we just prefer it that way though, so don't expect much in that regard to change when tech like this starts becoming common.

Using a plant (blue-green algae) as a nutrient source to feed mono-culture cells in vitro to grow pure muscle mass for processing into meat portions for human consumption seems like a good idea.

Would it still be recognized as meat?

No veins, arteries, connective tissue, nerve bundles, or grain structure at all.

How do you excercise a nerveless mass of muscle to keep it from degrading into fat, while it sits in a petri dish? Pump in the growth hormones so it gets big enough faster?

Even something as simple as a sponge has an internal structure, with many different types of cells needed to actually "be" a sponge.

I think I will just stick with the real thing thank you, slaughterhouses and all it entails.

We already have a easily created, homogeneous mass which can be used as a food and provides protein:

It's called Tofu..

ETA: Without at least cells and structure for capillaries and nutrient circulation, a thin sheet is all that could survive for very long. Internal cells would starve. Now to press the sheets and ...yep, Spam!

They lay the meat on big racks and stretch it to simulate exercise, it is obviously much more complex than that but im sure you get the idea, as you said without this the meats texture would be not so good....to put it lightly.
