Universities and Spies

How inappropriate is it for universities to raise funding by using students to smuggle spies in? Their logic:
we have a phd student so lets use him to send a spy into the country he is going into putting him in danger.
Or was there an arrangement: I imagine they would find it embarrassing not to give him his Phd now.

Does universities links to intelligence agencies compromise their independence of thought; are their courses disinformation. Would a university paid for by a foreign power, be obliged to only write course material about said power in a positive light: I'm thinking in this case, american literature, political studies.....

LSE (London School of Economics) was indeed corrupted by Libya. They were paid to bring them students in. This university is one of the best in the UK and in the world. They covered it up saying it was a gift: www.abovetopsecret.com...

Now applying to university this year for me is rather frustrating. Firstly, I'm working my socks off to get into a reputated university. I don't have the money these guys have...I'm spending most of my time studying (I have no social life haha)...and these guys who don't even study, don't work, use the price of money to get anything and everything they want.

Some universities indeed do write textbooks..but many are from other "educational" companies. These could indeed be financed or sponsored by someone from industrial companies...and therefore could be manipulating what we learn.

Again, the use of money for power and greed is becoming more common. It's not surprising but it's definitely disgusting.

You can find text books of whatever bent you would like. Universities are not usually charged with creating text books, unless a professor there goes through a publishing company to create a university mandated edition for a specific department (or you are University of Chicago, Cambridge, etc., who have their own press houses)

Nothing new when it comes to Espionage.
Even the politicians of a nation (President, Vice presidents, Dictators..etc) can also be a spy
Such is the nature of espionage. It is very hard to recognize a spy unless all of his/her action is monitored (phone, email, conversation, travel, family, friends, social media affiliation, special interest groups etc etc).

Upto certain extent, it might be Individuals who might conclude on their own to allow the agencies (MI5 or CIA or whoeverr) to use the University and Students as a recruiting ground. Many students frequent overseas universities these days including high school students due to the existence of foreign exchange program. This is nothing more than diversification of a relatively long term of the recruits from the Universities sector in addition to Movie stars, Musicians, Politicians, Businessmen/women and other industry specific individuals who frequently travel overseas.

Universities are also a good target to place spies in: an academic working for a foreign power could be valuable in a university. Universities research can be useful to intelligence agencies,a spy with in them and you get to see who is being recruited. I would think this would mean that universities will be chocked full of spies, working for various countries. Yet they still recruit there. It also means that they are uniquely ill suited to recruit, or to produce research of use to intelligence agencies. They may as well publish a monthly newsletter with all the names of new recruited spies and other secret information. This seems an unusual oversight.
