WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Obama administration announced on Tuesday a major shake-up of the U.S. agency that botched an attempt to track weapons smuggled to drug cartels in Mexico after guns were allowed to flow freely over the border.

Kenneth Melson, who has been acting director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives since 2009, was reassigned after admitting mistakes in the sting operation meant to try to crack down on weapons reaching violent drug gangs from U.S. gun stores.

What the real truth behind this?I think there is a lot more to this than they are talking.This make USA look as if we were helping them.Are we helping Mexico drug runners?Could they be the sellers for all the Afghanistan opium that is taken from the Taliban and flown off?What country could we wreck with drugs for our benefit?

He has to do something to save face. Anyone with a double digit IQ should be able to see that it wasn't a botched sting, but a corrupt government making money off gun smuggling. They think they can just do a little "reassigning" and everyone will forget about it? Hell they're probably right, but all these people should be fired/jailed...

They could be but they have their own line of merchandise. The CIA has sellers for all the wares. That's taken care of already.

What country could we not? These are global drug policies. US controls global drug trade.

Its a well known fact that only 5-10 percent of shipping containers get scanned at major ports throughout the world. The reason they state is because if they tried to scan 100 percent it would cause major delays and that is bad for capitalism.

That means you would have to be very unlucky to have your container caught in the first place and second even when caught some supervisor on the "mafia payroll" would likely look the other way. Too much money involved so if you do your job properly, you end up dead or dismissed immediately for "incompetance". Kingpins from columbia, usa and middle east have everything figured out. Ship owners get wealthy overnight!

I remember watching a discovery program once where it said FARC had a decent submarine fleet just for drugs.

I think that we may have been helping facilitate the flow of drugs to the US. But I see this Admin as using this OP as a way of further curtailing the 2nd amendment. This Admin has made no bones about this and see guns as evil.

Could it be that they see guns as evil because, they know they could never sieze power until they' re gone...kind of like Nazi Germany in the past?

Its not weather or not he can see it, its more about weather or not he can accept it as truth. Remember, they are looking through a veil, why would our good American ATF do such a thing? It couldn't be, they wouldn't do such a thing.

We all know the truth and some of us have SEEN it.

You must be extremely naive to think someone in ATF "screws up" and lets thousands of kalashnikovs enter into the hands of mexican drug gangs and then the government pretends its no big deal by simply transferring personel to other departments.

Nazi germany was not evil for no reason. It became evil to combat western european imperialism, which always had close ties to dirty capitalism, such as slavery. When the whole world is divided into 4-5 occupational forces
and germany has no direct access to the markets, losses WW1 and is forced to pay reparations, has infrastructure destroyed and lousy economy, THEN hitler comes along and tries to change things. Even the jewish holocaust as brutal/inhumane as it was had some underlying reason for it.

Yes but how would you know who owns and operates them? How can you be sure the cia is not allowing colombian submarines to unload drug cargo offshore during the night unscathed? America has no many resources at its disposal its quite perposterous to assume FARC is smarter than the american government.
