Indigenous Day of Action: Tar Sands White House: Sept 2, 2011

The purpose of these actions is to send a direct message to President Obama to deny approval of the 1,702 mile Keystone XL pipeline. The pipeline would be transporting pollution from the tar sands (also known as oilsands) of Canada to the United States by carrying 900,000 barrels per day of thick, corrosive, toxic, synthetic crude oil for refining in Texas and the Gulf States. If approved, the Keystone XL would lock the US into a dependency of energy intensive, hard-to-extract dirty oil and create a massive expansion of the world’s dirtiest and most environmentally destructive form of oil development currently taking place in northern Alberta Canada. These operations are already producing 1.5 million barrels per day and having horrendous environmental justice and human rights impacts on the way of life and health of the local Native communities of Cree, Dene and Métis.

The proposed pipeline threatens to pollute freshwater supplies in America’s agricultural heartland and grasslands with increased emissions in already-polluted communities of the Gulf Coast. The Keystone XL would cross Indian Country; States of Montana, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas encompassing Indian-US treaty territories crossing water aquifers and rivers, grasslands, cultural sites and ecological sensitive areas. Leaks and spills are common occurrences from such pipelines that could result in disproportionate impact to Native Nations and thousands of tribal members. A spill from the Keystone XL poses an even greater threat, given that the pipeline would run directly through the Ogallala aquifer, which supplies one-third of our nation’s ground water used for irrigation, and drinking water to 2 million citizens.

Native American and Canadian First Nations To Take Part

A barrel of tar sands oil emits up to three times as much climate-disrupting gas as conventional oil. Building Keystone XL would be the greenhouse gas equivalent of adding roughly 6.5 million passenger vehicles to the road, or constructing 12 new coal-fired power plants.

This is absolutely crazy! We are destroying our planet!

They want to put the Keystone Pipeline all through the US because the Canadian First Nations people are smart enough to say "NO", they won't allow the pipeline across their land. The Alberta Tar Sands are landlocked and they need a way to get the oil out of Canada.

Also in December 2010, a group of First Nations publicly rejected a 10% equity stake in the Enbridge Northern Gateway Pipeline. This would be a LOT of money for the First Nations and is a strong indication that they are not going to be bought.

Tar Sands Won't be Going to Asia Without Keystone XL

The day the Native Americans stop using oil products they will have the right to complain. Until then they should quietly sit down and quit being hypocritical.

President Obama, which he was elected stated "the rise of the oceans would begin to slow, and the planet begin to heal".

Instead we have the earth screaming at us, a recent earthquake on the east coast, a hurricane that went up the east coast, and a State department backing up this Pipeline. The pictures are out there of the physical destruction that this is causing. What about the horrific waste of water and air pollution being done? What kind of planet will our children, grandchildren and the future have to exist on if we continue to condone fossil fuels and not push harder for clean energy?

Tell me where you live so I can recommend your area for the pipeline to be placed. Then when it leaks and there is a big mess like in Michigan and in the Gulf of Mexico it can be in your backyard and not mine!

We obviously can't completely stop the use of oil but we can demand that more money be spent on developing clean energy and not encouraging oil companies to transport their oil all over the US. What does the US have to gain by this?

I bet if we follow the money our government supporters of this have..... stock in the oil company!

Nice video! Thank-you for sharing it... if only we all had as much common sense. I fear we will end up with a desolate planet from some in the future sci-fi movie.

I'm fairly certain that's the intention. The world's a stage.

And thats just what it is-- common sense.
Won't read about it in the "news"papers...
If we keep sending the message about, maybe just maybe we can change that future sci-fi-type vision!

Can't state it more clearly
than that!

Happily, President Obama can stop the pipeline, and even in a dysfunctional DC no one can stop him. Before the so-called Keystone XL pipeline can be built, he has to issue a certificate saying it is "in the national interest." The House can't make him do anything, nor the Senate. For once, it's entirely up to the president.

...i wish em luck and they're gonna need tons of it if that naive stance up there is indicative of the organizers...

...takes me back to the early 70s and all bad things the federal government was doing on pine ridge - like killing people who were trying to get the word out about how uranium mining was killing folks... that war is still going on...

...heres a link to a map of usa pipelines (not just oil pipelines), in case anyone's interested...
