Small Quake in EMPIRE STATE???

Ok, call me silly, but since when is New York called the "Empire State?" I mean it may have been for a long time, but it is news to me. Why didnt they just call it New York?

I only noticed it because I popped open the RSOE and noticed a small earthquake in New York. When I clicked it, it said location Empire State. It also listed the same way down below and also under the more information. Seems the quake itself is pretty much outside of Albany.

Im sure the quake is probably normal, but doesnt it fall under unusual places as well somewhat? I mean I don't usually see them on the map around there.

Coincidence? Or was that the 5 minute marker, before the main show begins? After scanning news and events over the last few weeks, i think consciously we all expect something larger.

Every state has its nickname. New York has always been the "Empire State."

New Jersey is the "Garden State."

I realize all states have their nicknames, and I am pretty clear on why New York would be the Empire State, but since when did Rsoe start using them as part of the description? This is the first time I have ever seen that.

The origin of 'Empire State' is sort of a mystery, but it's been around for a long time (think Empire State Building). George Washington apparently referred to New York as both "the seat of the Empire" and as the "pathway to Empire", but there are other theories as to where its popular usage came from.

Gotcha. Hmm, there are other inconsistencies I notice as well. California and Alaska are simply called "California and Alaska" whereas other states are listed with the prefix 'State of' ("State of Nebraska" for instance). Is this information centrally compiled or perhaps imputed by folks in different states?

Where in NY is East Township - the supposed epicenter of this tremor? Google seems blank

Yes, it says East Township on the RSOE. Strange that map hasn't updated since I posted this to begin with. Wonder why as it usually has a good refresh rate.

I am curious as to why Earthquakes from Greece do not show up on USGS. Go look at RSOE list and then USGS. None of the Greece EQ's show up. Anyone know why?

Actually I have been monitoring the usgs site for almost two years now and this is the first time I've seen a quake in new york. Sure we have small quakes here and there but ever since the pacific ring of fire lit up it seems like they are slowly making their way across the u.s. First in colorado and then virginia. No conspiracy theory, just facts. Just a strange place to see even a small quake.

More from the USGS site. There have actually been 16 small quakes in this area in the last week: Six over 2.0, the rest between 1.5-2.0.

as of sunday noon, 8/28/2011 there are 22 small earthquakes at this site, 3 miles from Altamont, NY.Any member near there? hear a Hummmmm?

NYC lays on a fault. Its been known that the region is quake capable for sometime now, and every 5-10 years you get some small grouped shaking.

In this case, its likely the water dumped by Irene has caused some slippage somewhere.
EDIT: Not to mention the NC Quake could of added stress.
