50 year-old cartoon tried to warn us of our future...

Crazy that people never paid attention to things like this. It warned us of what would happen but yet, the scenario it put forth as the 'bad' one is what we see in the world today.

A little upsetting that we are so dumb.

Anyway this is a cool little video that talks about freedoms versus the 'ism's' and what it means if we fall into the 'ism's' traps.

Any thoughts?

I've seen this around here before, did you do a thread search before posting it?

1984 by George Orwell was published in 1949 and it's amazing how accurate that novel was for it's time. The TV and political cartoons have been warning citizens for a century, but people are all the same.... they only hear and see what they want to hear and see, unfortunately.

Notice it encouraged the thought of freedom but not the reality behind of what makes freedom what it actually is. If this video was right on for the time then one of it's statements could have very easily included the degredation of idealistic christians.....which I think it may have.....and agree with. Big government is the major concern in out country....but not the only concern, it's the lack of unity of some others that could ultimately prevent out downfall.

I do not think big government is the problem. Some of the best ran countries have huge governments.

What I do think the problem with the governments is that they are ran by corporations and have completely sold out our rights and given more power to corporations.

Government doesn't run the country anymore, corporations do.

though a noble intent, the vignette seems fraught with an inconsistency.

america was founded by the progeny of colonial-ISM.
the idea quoted in the beginning of the film: "the freedom to OWN land" says it all. owning land is certainly a western concept- an offspring of colonialism. just ask the indigenous population at the time what they thought of the concept of 'owning the land'. freedom to them meant NOT owning the land.

i realize this response may not win me many friends, but i could not help but to notice the inconsistency.
perhaps i am being too nit-picky, and should enjoy the radical concept (for the time) presented in this entertaining form.

PS- the animation style is really flippin' fantastic. i do miss those old cell animation flicks.
the CGI is a bit too digitally-literal nowadays.

No I understand what your saying and it makes sense. But, there is weird people. You could build your home anywhere and then have people encroach on your home and built literally right beside it. When we own land we have a 'buffer zone' from others.

I think that is a big selling feature of 'owning' land.

"owning" something certainly takes a fair amount of guess work out of "squatter's rights". i suppose i understand the societal need for such a mechanism.

unfortunately, once we agree that 'owning things' is the rule, then we must assign a value to those things. the ideal would be a fair value, and oft times it is. hurray for healthy economics!

regretfully (especially with the more necessary items such as home & health & education) the value is ballooned to such proportions as to keep us in debt... in debt to banks, to governments, to syndicates... you name it.

and as many of us have learned the hard way, being in debt is no kind of freedom.


heck, i'm still paying off student loans long after my degree has been of any legitimate value.
maybe it serves me right for getting an art degree.

The student loans...paying for education makes no sense to me. How could a country not want its people to be educated? That's another argument...

What about 'allotted' land instead? Land based on your family size... Keep similar size lots together than the families with a bunch of kids would be around other families that could handle the noise.

Oh but there, right there you are talking about the most insidious and evil "ISM" there ever was: SOCIALISM.

I'm not saying any of those things, by the way, just stating that a lot of people will percieve what you've just said as socialism.

This is why free public education is so important. We need to drill this non-sense about freedom and personal property out of children and then in a few generations we can take away everything they have from them and their children.

Sorry.. I think I just channeled some communist from the 1950s.
