American Eagle good enough for the break in job?

American Eagle is fine.... What you don't want is any of that surplus ammo that might be a tad corrosive... you want to seal those micro-pores before that stuff can damage your barrel

Does this really improve accuracy in anyway?,

and should you break in/polish shotgun barrels in anyway?

improve accuracy ... not so much... basically what were doing here is filling all the tiny micro-pores so so corrosion doesn't have a place to catch hold and rot out your barrel from the inside... like I stated at the bottom of my OP you don't need to do this for a smooth-bore shotgun unless that barrel is a riffled slug gun

And to think I was breaking in my new firearms by blowing 500+ rounds through them or until the forearm bursted into flames which ever came first. haha Most firearms are more accurate than the person shooting them.

I have a gun i'd pay you 100 dollars if you could shoot 100 rounds through, in one sitting! After 25 rounds your shoulder will look like raw hamburger meat and after 50 you might very well have a detached retina. I'm thinking these are the types of weapons the op is referring too, not the dime a dozen semi auto' s or the plinkers. Great post by the way keep them coming please. I always learn something from your posts. Thanks..

There's an old .416 Rigby sitting in the back of my closet...shoots nice big 400 grain slug at 2,370 fps and a ME of 5,115 ft. lbs. At 100 yards... usually after 5 of those I'm done for the day but if you want to compare toys we can swap for an afternoon and see who gives up first

Might be me who gives up first...but I'm always open to the opportunity to go shooting with new friends

I had a buddy, who swore that using mercury cleaned a barrel and chamber of all carbon and contaminents with one pour.

Myself, not to fond of mercury poisoning, so I never tried that.

Have you heard of this method?

Yeah I have but.... you don't want to do this...

the old timers would heat the mercury first in a lead smelting pot... they were breathing in the fumes... the old man who showed me this trick had deep blue lines on his face... his veins... all from years of mercury exposure... don't do it...

Kind of a cool side note...
Mercury will dissolve numerous metals to form amalgams and is thus used to extract gold dust from rocks by dissolving the gold and then boiling off the mercury...
lots old timer miners died from breathing in the fumes... but it's still the best way to extract gold dust from a placer

AH! Shhhhh!

With this economy, you have just signed the death knell for those who think they know better and won't be affected by the fumes.

But maybe we didn't need them anyway....

I found this short Youtube video that fits nicely with this post.

He says 5 rounds is enough, but the basic gist of this thread is covered in the vid.
