Can hot air baloons stay stationary for a whole day at 30,000 feet?

I guess so. Oh well...maybe it'll be back in 800 yrs or so.

Wait till an alien comes to slap them in their face and stick it's tongue out at them. They'll still shrug it off.

Seriously though, Could you imagine if this was for real and you were able to get a decent picture of it, very close up with a telescope camera or something. It would be worth millions.

Maybe the aliens saw this ad on ATS...

...and just had to check it out
. Ahum... sorry. But yeah, it sure is strange that no decent footage of this thing have yet surfaced...

If it had been a supernova then it's position in the sky would have changed as the Earth rotated, like stars do at night anyway. Unless it was in the vicinity of the North star or something though I guess, on the axis...
Can someone with a bigger brain confirm what I said?

Aviation and weather experts are baffled by a mysterious object spotted in the skies over Minnesota.

The large, shiny, white object was spotted by many people who contacted 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS Thursday. It appeared to be a balloon of some kind.

The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Weather Service could not confirm exactly what the object was.

Weather service meteorologists say it was not one of their balloons.

The sad thing is that someone actually got paid to write that

I think if it were such a mystery or threat, then the USAF would have pounced on it instantly and not let the media have a field day with it....

Yes we all saw your little blimp comment thing in the other thread, if you'll notice the author of this news story and the discussion thread are the same so I'm sure he is well aware.

The discussion thread started first and then it was decided that it should also be made into a news story..

I contacted David Davenport of NUFON and he told me by e-mail that it was a research ballon launched by the Candian government to study the ozone layer.

Good research there! Can you post a copy of the e-mail for us to see?
It's still intersting how it didn't drift though, I realise that just because there are air currents at a lower altitude making the clouds move, it doesn' mean that there are any at a higher altitude, where the baloon was.
I wonder why they havn't informed the media as yet?

Here's a link to the supposed details of the research project by Canadian scientists. It details the upcoming launch of the balloons being referenced.

Question-

The related article, which I posted the link to, indicates a number of small balloons (about 8meters whenb inflated) being launched from Aug. 9 to September something(5th, I think). If these smaller balloons were aloft at the height estimated (30,000 feet or greater, given the clouds passed UNDER them) would it even be able to be seen at the resolution in thevideo? Also, what were/are the designs of these smaller balloons?

We can rule out the larger balloon i the article, it hasn't launched yet.

How can a smaller balloon launched, admitedly, from a relatively close geographic location such as Saskatoon stay aloft long enough to rest in the sky above the Twin Cities all day after traveling for what could only be a matter of hours? These balloons don't stay aloft long enough, hence the need to launch repeated numbers of them every other day as the article implies. Did it get caught up in the jet stream and then drop out of the jet over the twin cities? I am confused, and awaiting being straightened out, but it seems a little much like a 'convenient' explanation to rid themselves and others of questions.
