noob haz question for ATS. How high/far could a tsunami travel?

Hi im new here, well not really, iv been trolling for a long time on ATS.
But today I have a question.

I live in London Ontario. Im very close to Toronto. London Ont is 693 m above sea level. Lake Erie is to the south, lake Ontario is to the east and lake Huron, Michigan, Superior is to the west.


My question is how high would a tsunami have to be to reach me?
Could the great lakes create a tsunami?
Could a tsunami from the Atlantic Ocean reach me? and how high would it have to be?

The only danger I can see of a tsunami to you would be one caused by Meteor Impact this article doesn't really answer all your questions but it does point you in the right direction:

I wouldn't worry, it would be astronomical for a cosmic collision to occur there. More likely the Atlantic or Pacific oceans.

well im not really worried about comets or asteroids hitting earth. Im more concerned about earth quakes near here. Last year there was an earth quake in Montreal and i felt it all the way here in london. I have also started reading reports saying that in the last 2 weeks there have been rumbling/ tremors in windsor ontario which is very close to my area.

So my question is could an earthquake cause an tsunami in my area? Especially when Elenin and YU55 get close to earth.

There are too many, hmmm, Variables (??? maybe not the right word???)
Not every EQ caused a Tsunami
and sometimes a low Magnitude EQ cause a high Tsunami
and a high Magnitude EQ a low Tsunami!

One Reason why the Japanese Tsunami was so powerful are the Sediments
in that area, they caused huge Wave-Spikes!

And the Boxerday Tsunami was so powerful because of the huge affected Area,
as well as the Shores and the Sea-Underground!

But i doubt that a Tsunami will reach you at your Sea-Level
and when there is no need to worry anymore because the World as we know her
will be gone!

...hey, champ... interesting question... i have no idea if you're at risk for something like that... maybe if a mega-quake caused the niagra escarpment to collaspe but i dont even know if thats possible - just a wild guess... welcome to the show...
