You raise many issues that have been going around in my mind. Yes, there are militia groups and our media usually paints them as nuts. I truly don't believe that all groups are bad. I have thought more and more about finding people that think likewise. We aspire to finding people that think as a group with a basic common goal.

As for the military- I feel for them. I do not envy the current troops. In the last few months we have seen the gov't threaten their pay and now their retirement is on the chopping block. They are asked to give all and yet they are the first to be sacrificed. How they must feel.

In modern day America, mutual aid groups, CERT teams and civic organizations fill the role a peacetime militia would likely perform. The only time a militia would be used as an organized military would be in an invasion of the USA, militant tyranny, or WROL. As a civilian, one cannot be expected to be masters of warfare for these 'just in case' scenarios.

I am very pro-militia but I think one needs to realize that doing so outside of the 'just in case' scenarios duplicates the efforts of other organizations (which isn't a bad thing) and is mostly for personal fun/education. The downside to such groups is the awareness by the government of your groups size, location, resources, tactics etc. Should a militant tyranny develop, such groups become prime targets and can easily be eliminated. Not to mention the possibility of government agents being involved in the militia and potentially falsely involving the group in illegal activity, as has happened in the past.

I think the best thing for a person or group of people to do is to be involved in your community through the MAG's, CERT teams and civic organizations. Build relationships and a true sense of community so when something happens, you have something to fight for, more than just personal property but for each other. Still go shoot with your buddies on the weekend, involve your kids in scouts and Project Appleseed events, and take your family camping once in a while. After doing all of that, if a situation arises that calls for community militias, it will occur as natural as water pooling in low spots, and most will be skilled and experienced enough for local defense.

If you really wanted to plan ahead, you could have extra weapons, ammo or any specialty gear, along with books and manuals that if something happens, you can help fortify, supply and educate your community or those who didn't or couldn't prepare. For the most part, this would keep you off of government radar.

Getting a good sized militia togeather would be difficult and as mentioned by others, would instantly make you a target in a situation where the the government goes to #. It would probably be better to have a core of ten or so close friends that know about the combat side while they are all part of a larger group concerned with learning how to surivive in a SHTF situation. This way they can help the rest of the group pull forward without drawing official attention as being an armed and skillful (even if generally less so than the military) group. And anyway, not everyone in any group can specialize in combat. Having people learn older forms of medicine and how to make crops, and use a forge, etc would be just as important, as DB said. The after your in a survival group like the one I mentioned earlier finding a group that wants to learn combat tactics probably wouldn't be to difficult if it was a good sized group.

Not true, the groups i know have mostly ex-military guys with combat they can put on there resume. They join up for the comradery that one gets from being in the sh!t together that they dont have in civilian life. Dont have any retarded backwoods hicks with a double-barrel and a jug O` shine wistlin` dixie here. If and that is a really big IF we had to go up against NG or Army regulars we could give them a good fight. We know the land, we know what they know, we have mostly what they have as far as personal equipment. We even have an AirForce, even if its just a broken down single engine Cessna
I havent flown it in 2 years, the engine has gone bad in it and its currently in a thousand pieces that litters the hangar floor.

No one plays call of duty in this outfit.

I wish that was how it is around here. We have 2 militia groups not far from me, the biggest being the North Idaho Militia. But neither group had more than a couple members with any combat or even military experience. I was expecting to find more combat vets like myself, but was sorely disappointed.

The North Idaho militia is run by a guy with absolutely no military experience who likes to call himself a Major. Frackin ridiculous. Figured I'd be better off on my own.

I am have been a member of the Virginia state militia for 2 years.

The Virginia Defense Force (VDF) is the Commonwealth's military reserve.
The force is governed by the military laws of Virginia and managed by the Virginia Department of Military Affairs. The chain of command for the force consists of the Governor of Virginia (Commander-in-Chief), Adjutant General of Virginia, and Commanding General of the Virginia Defense Force.

The Virginia Defense Force, with a targeted membership of at least 1,200, shall be organized within and subject to the control of the Department of Military Affairs.

When called to state active duty, the mission of the Virginia Defense Force shall be to

* provide for an adequately trained organized reserve militia to assume control of Virginia National Guard facilities and to
secure any federal and state property left in place in the event of the mobilization of the Virginia National Guard

* assist in the mobilization of the Virginia National Guard

* support the Virginia National Guard in providing family assistance to military dependents within the Commonwealth in the
event of the mobilization of the National Guard

* provide a military force to respond to the call of the Governor in those circumstances described in § 44-75

If your going to be involved in any group, even if gov sponsored you need to determine if it follows a specific charter and set of rules to the letter.

You also need to be aware of you becoming a secondary psychopath based on the groups directions. Chances are very high that the group is already controlled by a psychopath regardless of its origin. Sometimes its best to stay away. If the warning signs are there call them out to people you know are taking part.

It is a great idea. But flawed in your founding reasons. If you start a militia for reasons of confronting the govt. then you've already failed. You wont get public support, and you'll recruit the wrong people. You need to start on the basis, that your group is a first line of local defense against anything i.e. natural disasters, riots, assist in missing persons searches, and yes even local invasions. But, banding to fight Martial Law is not the way to go.

Trust me, I have experience in starting voluntary constitutional militias. Tried twice, there's gonna be alot of people that are going to try to stand in your way. Alot of conflicts, and alot of trying times. Look out for the "arm-chair warriors", they'll give you the most problem. But, there is a resurgence here in Nebraksa again for militias, so theres still hope.

bad idea for a number of reasons

ruby ridge, waco and numerous other examples,

homeland security and fbi have already pegged all survivalists and "preppers" terrorists.

they are watching you and looking for any reason do come bust down your doors.

the fact is the national guard is the only allowed "citizens militia"

Actually the VDF in Virginia only answers to the Governor of Virginia, we are a legal militia and we exceed 1,800 members. Now as militias go only state sponsored militias are widely socially accepted.

The Ruby Ridge incident did not involve a militia. It was one guy, his wife and 2 kids who were living in a cabin they built themselves on land they legally purchased. On the day of the incident, a family friend was also there.

During these tough and trying times, would seem logical for average Joe citizens to congregate and work on weapons training, survival techniques, fitness training, shooting lessons. As trust in the government is scarce these days, and all of these talks of martial law, should we take our own actions to learn how to stand up and fight a corrupt government? Would we need to learn these tactics? Would our military support the citizens, or obey orders from there command? What do you guys think? Food for thought.

This is what 90% of civilised country's used to have before the 20th Century in some form of another. I would say the decline in western civilisation has come about partly because we've forgotten and ignored this.

In fact in the UK anyone who try's going about this is labelled as a 'Michael Ryan' or 'Nutter' because of one crazy out of the million's of gun owners in the UK...
