It was proven that the boys barely knew each other and probably never hung out with one another.

Your talking about a corrupt legal system, not a Justice system.
You obviously don't know how americas legal system works.

The State of Arkansas claimed rather emphatically that they would never have been released were they truly guilty. The state is basically exonerating them without admitting to any kind of wrongful prosecution, thereby saving any kind of lawsuit.

On the other thread it was mentioned that they perjured themselves if anything, but they took an Alford plea which pretty much convicts them without legally recognizing their guilt. That just means that the state is acknowledging they are innocent, but guilty, because they are letting them go.

If they are truly innocent, then they are getting royally screwed, but its much better than waiting 5 or so years to attempt a new trial. The state won't pay them, but I'm sure they be able to make money off their story.

I'm not going to make any comment regarding the guilt or innocence of the alleged protagonists in this crime, as none of us no the ins and outs of this case and previous events relating to this case.

However, I will say that the whole idea of a ''plea bargain'' is contrary to the concept of justice in a civilised society. Someone who is charged with a crime should go before a jury of their peers without the needless intervention of police, prosecutors and lawyers.

Anyone who's charged with a crime should be dealt with identically to everyone else, regardless of their plea.

The notion of ''plea bargains'' should be reserved for those third world countries that we love to look down our noses at.

As long as these guys have been in jail... I would have jumped at the deal myself if it meant I would be immediately released.

The real sad thing about this case is that it will not be reopened and the true killer will not even be looked for. They finally got good solid DNA evidence, and the same system that went after these young men will now turn their back and not look for whom they should have to begin with.

After 15 years in a hole you really need to know how the law works. You do not. Move along.

Thanks for your thoughts but the law in the USA works in a very strange way. If you have money then you have many options.

Well actually, people all over the world no the ins and outs of this case because the entire witch hunt of a court case was filmed and has been shown all over the world which is why there are tens of thousands of people from around the world that have petioned, protested and donated money to try and assist in getting these boys out of jail. In a nutshell, the only evidence against these boys was that they listened to heavy metal music and that was enough for the police in this hick town to create the hysteria required to get a conviction. They completely ignored the enormous amount of evidence including DNA evidence that points directly to the stepfather of one of the victims.

All bar one of the victims parents have been leaders in the fight to free the WM3. That alone should tell you how disgraceful this witch hunt was.

People have been pleading guilty for things they haven't done for centuries if it'll save themselves from possible execution. The witch trials are evidence of that.

DNA from one of the victims stepfather was found on the shoelace used to tie up one of the dead boys...

No DNA was found linking the accused Memphis Three.

So for those that claim these guys are still guilty, how do you reconcile that?

From CNN (it must be true): they maintained their innocence but acknowledged that prosecutors have evidence to convict them.
www.cnn.com...
"the boys' bodies were mutilated and left in a ditch, hogtied with their own shoelaces. Prosecutors argued that the men who were convicted, teenagers at the time, were driven by satanic ritual and that Echols had been the ringleader."

So there are people on ATS that actually believe these kids were given a fair trial and found to be guilty with good reason? I find this last quote you put up the most interesting. Does anyone know what the most compelling evidence that they were involved in a Satanic cult was that was introduced into court?
Echols owned 11 concert t-shirts that all happened to be black.
What century was it in WM when it was the 1990s everywhere else.

On what planet?
Innocent people plead guilty all the time because of how often the "justice" system decides they made their case and you are only going to get one choice. Be convicted on fraudulent evidence and rot in jail or plead guilty and hope they take it easy on you. That is what is happening on my planet.

That is horse puckey. These kids already spent 18 years of their lives for a crime that they did not commit. That was the only way they were getting out of prison because Arkansas messed this case up so bad they won't ever admit the sham that it was. It was because of media and celebrity support that the men were finally released. One of the biggest miscarriages of justice I have read about. I suggest you do some reading up, this is a very well known case.

Plea bargains take place every day. Criminal defense attorneys and public defenders push defendants to take them because they are threatened with long, long, sentences if they are found guilty by a trial. The system is set up like that. It is disgusting. This isn't the first time, nor will it be the last, that defendant's take a plea deal out of the sheer terror that in unleashed upon them by their counsel. Makes me sick to my stomach. Oh, and trust and believe the judge will punish those that seek to try to defend themselves at a trial. Disgusting!!
