Got a link to this yt video:

www.youtube.com...

..during th 0:18th second a green "laser" looking light appears.. apparently this light occurs a few times throughout, but I only had the patience to grab this one screen shot.

Some type of tracking maybe?.. found an article that could be related:

The ISS Laser Broom, Project Orion

"NASA and the US Air Force, which are jointly funding the test, are keen not to breach international treaties preventing the use of laser weapons in space. So Project Orion is only designed to test the ability of the laser to lock onto space junk. The shuttle will release simulated space debris equipped with GPS so that its position can be monitored. Then a ground-based laser will "light up" the target."

.. found it interesting.

Looks kinda like the camera glitched IMO.
If it were a laser, what would it have been used for?

The article says something about blasting space junk out of the ISS path.. I dunno. I've watch the laser like thing a few times.. its around the 18th sec, a brief flash.. I can't personally tell if it's from the ISS, or from the ground.

Maybe there's a simple answer, maybe not.. ATS is a good place to find out. I have no personal interest other than I found it interesting.

except its greenbeam...i guess.
still cool whatever it is.

It does look like a green laser.
If you pay close attention to the video before the "laser" you will see flashes of light that don't appear to come from the satellite.
That's why i said glitch, who knows though. It's possible.

It was cloudy here the other night,
I look up into the sky, and i see the clouds passing through a green laser.
Possibly related? Its not the first time i've seen it either. It could be coming from the university nearby

Found a distinct possibility.. from 2005:
www.clayobservatory.org...

Laser Project with International Space Station March-April 2005 • Collaborators: NASA-Johnson Space Center This original research project involved researchers at NASA; the Italian, Russian, and European Space Agencies; University of Rome; U.S. Naval Observatory; and University of Maryland.

A 10-watt laser was fired from the Clay Center’s main telescope to a window on the International Space Station, 400 km (250 miles) away, and the reflected light was used to build an image of the spacecraft. The purpose of this experiment was to develop a system that will allow telescopes on Earth to spot damage on satellites in space, with the goal of preventing another tragedy such as the one that destroyed the Space Shuttle Columbia in February 2003. Dexter and Southfield high-school students met with astronomers and scientists from Italy and Maryland and learned about the physics of the project. The students also participated in one of the laser firings. An article and a photograph of the laser appeared in the Boston Globe on May 15, 2005.

I don't think that's a possibility considering the shuttle system has been scrapped. Since we're seeing those lasers today, and comparing it to that statement, I think we can deduce that it was a lie.

How do you go from "allowing telescopes on Earth to spot damage on satellites" to "a goal of preventing shuttle Columbia disasters?" Does that seem odd to anybody else?

I think the reasoning is that if the laser can detect damage on satellites you can use it to scan larger objects like spacecraft that house people, and for why its being used after the shuttle program bureaucratic inertia with programs does exist as well as future applications..

Not odd at all.

The Columbia disintegrated on re-entry because of unrecognized damage to the wing. Damage which led to the careful post orbital visual examination of every square inch of the skin of the orbiter in subsequent missions.

You are assuming that the video does depict a laser.

I guess what I find odd is that they would be doing that even without a space shuttle program. It also seemed like the technique of examining the shuttle by camera would be sufficient. It seems lasers are over the top, if you catch my drift. Yes, I'm assuming that's a laser. What do you think it is?

I can't even see it in the video. Must be my eyes.
But with the other flashes it's pretty much sure to be something going on with the camera. Laser beams aren't visible in space, nothing for them to illuminate. No matter what you see in Star Wars/Trek.

Seriously, check it out at :18. It's fairly bizarre. Pause it if you can. The photograph shows a good still of it. It's pretty quick.

I tried. And tried.
It's either me or my computer.
