You are implying that they heard the gospel but can't believe or find it impossible. That is a choice. They are choosing not to belive in Christ for their salvation. The parable of the sower is about hearing the gospel. Some will choose to believe and some will choose not to believe.

Also, purgatory is not Biblical. It's one of those man made things that allow some to get to heaven based on their own merits. And because people in purgatory are prayed for they will make it to heaven also. So it's based on something we do. Each person must decide before death.

For by grace you are saved through faith and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God, NOT OF WORKS, lest anyone should boast.

I just thought I would point out that the Catholic doctrine of purgatory is based on the Catholic Canon.

Edit: I thought I would clarify that it was just the emotional outpouring and forgiveness portion of that hypothesis that was fairly descriptive of the Cahtolic Purgatory, and not the "extra step".
