Yes the fireball did have a tail, about the size I can't say. It was moving so fast that I only saw it for a split second. My husband was talking portuguese, and by the time I translated that in my head (I'm Afrikaans), the fireball moved pass the car.Lol
I know we were driving 120-140km/ph, and the fireball just flew pass at an incredible speed. At the speed it was going it should not have been able to avoid the side/hill of the overpass. Sorry I have no idea what you call that part of the bridge, not even in Afrikaans.

It is a bit of the Peresid meteor shower. A bit that got further into the atmosphere.

If you look around, you'll find that there are more reports of "green fireballs" at this time of the year, and during the Leonids.

A few years ago, I saw a green fireball form over a lake. It was not a meteor. I saw it appear about 300 feet over the lake, fly about 100 feet horizontally over the lake, and then it just disappeared mid-flight. I know it was not a meteor as it was too low to the ground and flew far too slowly. It flew close to the shore and wasn't too much higher than the tree-tops. It seemed about the size of a basketball. It was a dark lime green color.

I think some of these "green fireballs" are surely meteors. And some are equally surely not meteors. In the instances they are not meteors, then what are they? Aliens ships? UFO exhaust? A strange form of ball lightning? Could be anything. Fun to think about.

Perspective changes how fast something appears. Your perspective of the object is likely the cause of this effect.

You can get the same effect watching planes. The planes aren't going vastly different speeds, just your point of perspective makes it appear so.

This fireball certainly didnt "seem" like a meteorite. Maybe i'm just too much of a believer, but it seemed different to me. especially with the helicopter searching the area at that time of night....

I can't say for sure, but it could have been a foofighter.
