Sounds like a graphics driver issue. Trying switching to a different one under your hardware settings.

Not a graphics issue, tried three different computers, might be a ROM issue, but I hope its just the emulator.

I've just started using Linux again as well, and I've found that the forums for my particular distro (Mandriva) are a good source of information. Many people have had the same problems I had, and even though there might not be a good answer there, sometimes there's some good links in the posts. Also, you can save some time by finding out what didn't work in the forums as well...
