KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) -- A military helicopter crashed in eastern Afghanistan, killing 31 U.S. special operation troops and seven Afghan commandos, the country's president said Saturday. An American official said it was apparently shot down, in the deadliest single incident for American forces in the decade-long war.

The Taliban claimed they downed the helicopter with rocket fire while it was taking part in a raid on a house where insurgents were gathered in the province of Wardak late Friday. It said wreckage of the craft was strewn at the scene.

ATO confirmed the overnight crash took place and that there "was enemy activity in the area." But it said it was still investigating the cause and conducting a recovery operation at the site. It did not release details or casualty figures.

Please stop this war. This is just crazy.

WE are in secret talk with them and then this crap.

JUST END IT ALREADY. The common people don't even want us there. The cause is lost in misery

Considering that there were our "Partners" the Afgan Commandos with them, it would not surprise me that the raid was leaked out so there was a welcoming committee waiting for them along the flight path or on the DZ itself.

We have wasted to many lives and entirely too much money trying to "Nation-build". It hasn't worked since the end of WW2.

In WW2 we went to war with the goal of unconditional surrender, and got it. At that point, we then begin to help in the rebuilding efforts. How anyone thinks we can do the two things at once is beyond me.

It is my belief, that during these so called "talks", we should be linking up the former Northern Alliance with energy, mining and pharmaceutical companies, leave them the HUMMV's and refurbished equipment and let them know that we will back them when needed as long as they keep the Taliban in check and the drug trafficking down. Hell, toss in bonuses for every ISI agent they catch or kill.

If they renege on the agreement, then we bomb them until nothing stands, and not go back to rebuild.

They'll still be a backwater tribal country, but they'll be a "friendly" backwater tribal country.

I guess this is a good reason to not put 31 soldiers in one helicopter. Just because it can hold that many doesn't mean it's a wise thing.

unfortunately, the only thing people respond to is death. if we had 31 deaths/day, this war would end very quickly.

All for the joke on Terra. Meanwhile the borders remain wide open here at home for a dirty bomb to come in. Yeah, that makes sense. All so the masters of puppets can have their Natural gas line run through Afganastan and at the same time rape that Country of it's minerals and natural resources. That includes the Chinese, who just were awarded the largest Copper mining contract thanks to our so-called allies in the Afganistan Government. They are all also after Lithium as well. ~SheopleNation
