A truly bizarre story from Australia.Does anyone there think this may be organized crime?I mean not just some halfwit can build a device like this.

I had a chance to think about this device since that pizza guy got whacked and I think I know of a way to remove the device safely. In case it is remotely controlled like the last one appeared to be, they need to first get the person in a radio neutral location like a huge storage locker or freezer, something. Then, in case it is pressure sensitive they need to slip metal plates under the collar and tie them off so that they maintain pressure. This could have the affect of forcing the blast outward if it is tripped upon removal also. Once they get as close to 100% as they can then try to remove it. Still could be other considerations. I think this low down stuff is sad. Sad that people would dare to treat others like we've seen happening daily in the news. How can people sleep with themselve being so vile?

The details will be interesting as to how they got in and placed this bomb around her neck .

Simple. She let them in and sat quietly while they strapped it around her neck. She followed their directions and waited for Phase 2 of the scam to unfold.

I mean, seriously -- think about it. Who suddenly discovers something strapped around their neck and doesn't rip it off out of confusion or fear? Anybody would. And if were some type of bomb with a trigger it would probably go off immediately.

This is so amateurish that it is hilarious. No organized crime would do such a stupid thing.

But the drama queens will continue to believe the girl. Empty lives, anyone?

So do you think it'd be totally impossible to drug someone, and strap something to them? let me tell you that it's not. I've strapped lots of things to very drunk people, with tiewraps usually. Nothing as drastic as a bimb, bikes, ironing boards and kettles and stuff. We used to call it drunk bukaroo. (they wake up and start flailing, sending stuff flying everywhere, just like in the game, but much funnier)

And do you think the pizza guy was just messing around? Until they blew his head off......

Anyone who knows Australia knows this just inst right, its either a hoax (fake bomb but after 10 hours Im not so sure) or done by someone international.

That said, theres something else that seems wrong. Our news isnt touching it much, talking art, bananas, biscuits & other useless &^%*, but the main thing I find odd is the cops are standing around laughing & smiling.

Now I know theres not a lot they can do, BUT, all those lights on you guys, thats the international media watching you laugh !!!! Just today I was defending the integrity of our cops here, & now Im watching them have a good laugh on international TV while a girl apparently has a bomb around her neck! Is it just me or is there something wrong about that ?

The news ticker suggests the cops have absolutely no idea about any of this, the device, the motive, the way out, nothing, they are calling for public help.

The girl is claimed to be from one of Sydneys wealthiest families, so that could be anyone. Press conference in a few minutes so I'll hang on. They pushed it back another 20 so thats it for now.

Edit. News ticker now says the device is in "near vicinity" of girl, so its probably not a neck bomb.

Edit 2. They just said it was around her neck so ????
edit on 3/8/2011 by SNAFU38 because: (no reason given)

Edit 3. At 2230 Sydney time. Still working on device. Girl in good spirits but getting cold. Still serious & delicate. Question re bomb A device is tough nut to crack as to work out what it is or isnt, avoiding bomb question. Negotiators keeping her calm, parents doing worse than her, not allowed to talk to her.

Enquiries are broad. Avoided extortion question & said its serious. No international agencies involved but making enquiries. Wont describe device. No idea how long this will take. 4 cops in with her. Nearby houses evacuated. No contact with culprit. Thats all for tonight from the cops.

Im starting to think that the device is presure sensitive, maybe a landmine type of explosive.

The last press confrence was just held, and to be honest there were no real new devolpments.

The one thing I did find interesting was, they have not had any contact with the person who left the note and device. Theres a red flag.

It was stated that it would be the last update from the police tonight.

Its now 11:00PM and this has been ongoing since 2:30PM

Prank?
Ransom?
Underworld?
Corporate terror?
Political terror?

At this stage who knows.

I agree with the above post, this is just plain strange.

Wedlock was the name of that movie...

bloody terrible for her (her family) and all Aussie cops involved within the danger zone.
Listening to update now.

"Hard one to understand" meaning the device
"Throughout this she has remained calm"
"How long...?"
(breakdown in communication)
then...
"At 10:30 police conitnue to work for her safety, the fact that it has been so long ....police continue to work very hard....they are also working out the welfare of the family....her spirits are good...steps taken that she is comfortable..... operation serious....delicate....persevere for as long as it take for the lady's safely....."
Bom involved >?
Restatisfy what it is we are dealing with (he seriously said restatisfy)
she's circumstances are difficult she's doing a great job...keep her calm....but tough....the parents are doing it tougher...but as you expect they.....
The only people talking to her are police 7 hours....
note?
demands?
we;re continuing to investigate all aspects
speaking to a number of agencies afp(?)
Enquiries internationally?
Large small device?
Not going to go down that avenue
We are hear for as long as it takes...
4 specialist boys in there
perimeter in place
evacuated nearby residents

I'd be more worried of there WAS more news coverage on it to be honest. It is fairly standard procedue to keep hostage situations/violent demads like this, out of the news until it's been played out. Too much news coverage could end in a very bad result, with the bomber getting itchy fingers and hitting "bang" on his bang button.

Im not saying its a news blackout, when its on, its in your face, but when you have a 24hr news channel, you'd expect them to cover it a bit more than repeating old stories about bananas.

My biggest concern/dissapointment was the fact there are cops, who must know they are on TV, standing there laughing & joking.

This is not Australia, this doesnt happen, this is big news. I appreciate your point about not giving much away to the culprit/s, but that one flew a while ago.

Unscheduled conference : - Moments ago secured release of young girl, reunited with parents.

CSI now doing their job. Very elaborate device, still dont know if its explosive.

Was located in such a way it took 10 hours to remove (ie it was on her) so good job boys in the bomb squad

UK Military did give advice. Were familiar with that type of device. Sure he said that.

No idea on motive. Girl has disclosed a lot of information & that can now be acted upon now she is safe. Yes your idea was confirmed by the police, keeping info to culprit limited. Sounds like they got a lot of leads from her.

Girl did get food & water throughout.

Wont talk about note attached.

Results of several explosive detection attempts dictated their actions throughout the day.

spot on.....cops said it was a very elaborate device....this isn't amatuers knocking up something in the back shed together.....

What interest me is a couple things.....

one, the Federal Police were there.....kind of telling you that they are treating this with the upmost importance and who knows if the culprits are international in nature?

The other being, what made the feds think of contacting the British Military for advice? seems the authorities put out an urgent call to all their mates around the world for any help they could....great to have mates like that there to help you in time of need but also highlights the importance of this.

Obviously we are never going to find out the truth of the matter, but regardless what the motives were, or whatever the family may have done to make themselves a target this is some serious # to have to deal with....I hope she manages to get the psychological trauma over time....

The British military have a lot of historical, current and ongoing experience in dealing with explosive devices of varying levels of complexity, having dealt with this kind of thing long before "IED" became part of the everyday language. If you want to call someone for advice, they're a fairly logical choice.

"Elaborate" is also a subjective word, as well as comparing it to an "amateur" level. What's the recognised standard for "competent" amongst illicit bombmakers?

I swear i've seen this in a movie once, cant remember which one though.

That would be "Battle Royale", where Japanese highschool students are forced to kill each other to survive a government discipline program, or their bomb collars go kabloom.

Bomb has been proven to be a hoax. The cops thought otherwise at first because a ransom note was 'elaborately' written, it appeared to be real. Glad to see the girl released from the hospital on chechups.

Mr Pulver's resume includes holding top positions here and overseas with market research companies including AC Nielsen, and he has been president of the Shore Foundation, the fundraiser organisation of the elite Sydney Church of England Grammar School, of which he is an old boy.

Appen provides linguistics technologies to companies including Microsoft, Google and Nokia.

Chris Vonwiller, whose wife founded the company, told The Australian in 2008: "Appen's technology is virtually used in most of the world's automated telephone call centres as well as in-car navigation systems."

"Our customers are large IT firms and government bodies, including the US Defence Department - Appen is well known in Washington's government agencies."

Geez, with that kind of expertise behind her, one would think she and her home would have better security...

Hoax.
