LONDON Aug 1 (Reuters Life!) - Up to 70 percent of British men and half of all Western European men are related to the Egyptian Pharaoh Tutankhamun, geneticists in Switzerland said.

Scientists at Zurich-based DNA genealogy centre, iGENEA, reconstructed the DNA profile of the boy Pharaoh, who ascended the throne at the age of nine, his father Akhenaten and grandfather Amenhotep III, based on a film that was made for the Discovery Channel.

The results showed that King Tut belonged to a genetic profile group, known as haplogroup R1b1a2, to which more than 50 percent of all men in Western Europe belong, indicating that they share a common ancestor.

Among modern-day Egyptians this haplogroup contingent is below 1 percent, according to iGENEA.

"It was very interesting to discover that he belonged to a genetic group in Europe -- there were many possible groups in Egypt that the DNA could have belonged to," said Roman Scholz, director of the iGENEA Centre.

Around 70 percent of Spanish and 60 percent of French men also belong to the genetic group of the Pharaoh who ruled Egypt more than 3,000 years ago.

"We think the common ancestor lived in the Caucasus about 9,500 years ago," Scholz told Reuters.

It is estimated that the earliest migration of haplogroup R1b1a2 into Europe began with the spread of agriculture in 7,000 BC, according to iGENEA.

However, the geneticists were not sure how Tutankhamun's paternal lineage came to Egypt from its region of origin.

The centre is now using DNA testing to search for the closest living relatives of "King Tut".

"The offer has only been publicised for three days but we have already seen a lot of interest," Scholz told Reuters. (Edited by Paul Casciato)"

That would be cool if they do, I wouldn't be surprised if it was someone who is part of some royal family in Europe, possibly Spain's or England's.

Every bit of life on this planet shares some common ancestor. It's called evolution. We all ascend from some species of archaebacteria that existed some 2.5 billion to 3 billion years ago. I'm fairly positive of that timeframe.

Clarification, its reign was not half a billion years, it just existed some time within that timeframe.

Biologically speaking, you could go outside and pick up a caterpillar and a common ancestor could be found. The same goes for humans and a banana tree, or a gecko and a lobster. We are all mutants of a really old bacterial species.

There's a lot of myths and legends about this.

One such legend states that the Egyptians had been in contact and trade with Europeans during the families dynasty. And when Tut was murdered, his sister and any remaining family fled north towards Britain. Not sure if there are any legends saying they came from Britain, but did read the one that said they fled to Britain.

Interesting story, even more so that less then 1% of Egypt has the same DNA type.

I believe the relationship to Tut is not personally from any children
Tut fathered (he did father one child according to the Discovery Channel that was known but the child died)...as the relationship is more than likely from one of Tut's relatives...either his Father or Grandfather. The way the article is written is quite vague.

The article states that King Tut and half of European men belong to same haplogroup; they share a common ancestor who lived nearly 10,000 years ago.

Anyway, I thought this was known already? Here is an interesting thread on this very subject from over a year ago:

IIRC king tuts grandma, Akenaten's mother was from Mitanni, ergo, indo-european ,
this has been known for a long time,
so i don't see what all the fuss about tut "being white" is all about.

unless some major BS/historical revision is being pulled here.

contact with Mycenae, and possibly Etruscans counts as old-European [pre-caucasian] there was actually a lot of trade along the Mediterranean going back to antiquity than is credited. also prior to 9000 BCE there was no Mediterranean just lowlands, there is a lot of secret history under water over there.

what is amazing is that no sunken cities have yet to be found yet either the flood that filled it destroyed or buried these cities deeply.

or nobody is looking for them

the Egyptian princess you referenced was the legend of Scota,
i forget her husband's name but he was Phoenician,
their son, Gael is the ancestors of those Irish and Scots that claim Gaelic descent.

It isn't "half" his DNA.

The Y-DNA is not even close to half your DNA. How ridiculous.

Exactly...

It indicated there was a common ancestor thousands of years before Tut was born. This has nothing to do with what happened after Tut deaths. The finding doesn't surprise me. Some will take offense to the finding.

In our modern era there seems to be two camps. Those who believe the Pharaohs were all white and those who claim they and other cultures/civilizations in the region were all Black Africans. From my studies I've deduced that people of this and preceding periods weren't as ignorant and racially biased towards one another as are many today [Supposedly Modern Man]

When the evidence clearly shows overwhelmingly both "Black and White" Pharaohs and extended royal family members. I always think of the saying "Its good to be the King" In this case the Pharaoh. When Egypt switched over from the earliest days of being Matriarchal to Patriarchal the line passed from Father to Son instead of Mother to Son. If a Pharaoh had a favorite Wife/Concubine [Of whatever racial lineage] then her first son or the Pharaohs favorite son would be primed for the throne regardless of Racial mixture.

Then of course we have the division between Upper Egypt and Lower Egypt. [Lower Egypt being closer to the Mediterranean AKA White or Semitic Egypt and Upper Egypt being closer to Nubia - Aka Black Egypt].

The throne IMO [racially speaking] kept going back and forth between different bloodlines as they fell in and out of favor in an attempt to keep power balanced between the two and maintain the peace within all of Egypt. [Upper and Lower]

Just a thought.

Western European secret societies are filled with Egyptian images. It seemed they knew the connection before genetic science had it's say which could add more fodder for those conspiracies that link a east/west esoteric connection.

A very large quotient of us have Genghis Khans DNA as well. Tut died when he was seventeen, never having left egypt (if memory serves correctly), whereas Khan (Khaaaaaaaaaaaaaan!) raped and pillaged his way across a good chunk of asia and europe. Perhaps I'm missing something, but how would half the population end up with Tut's DNA when I believe only about a tenth of us have the DNA of Genghis, who was MUCH more busy in his considerably longer life?

...on topic... this is junk science, imo, and even junkier interpretations... the same game was promoted with alleged descendants of genghis khan...

I rather resent that. You claim this theory (which I don't even agree with) to be a racist theory, and then you go and make a broad generalization regarding Caucasians. As a white historian who thinks this theory is nonsense, I am insulted sir.
