Advocacy Groups Question Cell Tower Safety

www.foxnews.com

Living near a cellphone tower might eventually melt your brain, give you cancer or worse, neuter your reproductive organs -- at least that’s the warning issued this week by a dissenting group of trade activists.

“People who live near cell towers and antennas are in jeopardy,” Dr. Robin Bernhoft, president of the official-sounding but really obscure American Academy of Environmental Medicine, told FoxNews.com.

Questions about the safety of cell phone towers and other types of EM sources such as high voltage power transmission lines (not to mention holding an EM transmission source right next to your brain pan,) have been a topic of concern for many years.

IMHO opinion, research into the safety of these omnipresent types of EM sources needs to be commissioned. If it is found that they do indeed cause health risks, then we really need to figure out some way to protect people from this radiation.

I don't know if the answer is to move people away from transmission towers, or to move the towers away from people, but IF there is a link then the issue needs to be addressed.

This is really interesting since I live within 2 miles of a tall guyed cellular tower. I wonder how far they're dangerous? I know I wouldn't want to live right under one that's for sure, and go figure, there's a large number of homes being built right near the tower, some of them just feet from the guy-wire terminators!

Thanks for pointing this out, I hope the FCC will seriously consider re-evaluating tower radiation pattern safety.

Then offer information, and if they aren't interested, let them be. I've lived less than a mile from a cell phone tower (and I possess a cell) for about 10 years now and haven't observed, felt, or experienced any negative effects. Neither have I heard of any happening.

And be that as it may, as far as anecdotal evidence, you have to admit that one year is hardly a good long term study. Not saying I think some of the more sensational claims are valid, just saying there is still A LOT we dont know about how this will effect us and our environment.

Although in this time of 'budget cuts' I doubt any regulatory agency would have the teeth to go after cell companies or whoever owns those towers.

I've followed this debate since the dawn of cellular technology. I heard the mention of antenna's as well, Just what band and frequencies are we talking about here? I've been an avid Ham Operator for over 28 years now.

I have two towers of my own both with multiple arrays on them, On the 160-6 meter bands transmitting well over 2k worth of RF as well as 2m-70cm and into the Ghz bands, Obviously less power of course. I've yet to notice any side effects from exposure. Of course at ground level there is little radiation pattern from any of my antennas. But one thing I've notices is I never get sick. I do a lot of welding as well, and I've heard Radio operators and welders in general do on an average get sick a lot less.

Just my two cents. The whole debate with cell phones and health concerns, I for one don't like having anything Xmiting RF anywhere near my head, Weather its Cell phones or portables. I've seen a lot of Biased data both ways on this matter.

As far as higher powered Xmitters, I know i don't want to be anywhere near the radiation patterns. Specialty Into the higher frequencies. as far as shortwaves is concerned, I'm not so worried. as long as its low wattage.

I've heard a few stories over the years from other hammers about High SWR and stray RF inside the radio shack and how some of them felt ill at times. I can see a link in areas.

I sit on the fence in some respects. I'm not familiar with Cellular towers and Xmitter wattage's.

I couldn't find the document I was looking for, but this might have some gems in it.

EM Fields & Human Health. Fundamental & Applied Research.
www.dtic.mil...

"Abnormal EMF (37Hz, disturbed geomagnetic and hypogeomagnetic field) consistently increase pain sensitivity in mice by suppressing stress induced hypoalgesia (i.e. pain reduction in alarm conditions) (Del Seppia et al. 2000, Choleris et al. 2002).
Abnormal EMF (disturbed geomagnetic field, 37Hz) increase pain sensitivity in humans as well and alter pain-evoked potentials (Papi et al.1995, Sartucci et al. 1997).
In addition 37Hz EMF and solar storms increase arterial blood pressure
(Ghione et al. 1997, 1998).
Our results thus indicate that a disturbed geomagnetic environment may alter various behavioral and psycho-physiological parameters related to stress responsiveness (escape behavior, pain perception, blood pressure). These findings are consistent and confirmed in various animal species, and suggest that EMF may affect some important physiological mechanism(s) involved in stress-coping mechanisms, which are highly conserved in vertebrates."

Something about cell-dehydration too, but I only scanned through it.

EM radiation is a known cause of cancer. While the acceptable dose is always a question, it's basic harmfulness cannot be questioned.

It becomes a question of which is worse, towers or handsets? Do we even want an answer to that?

A long running blog i've read with plenty of really good information is:

Sure, as x-ray, gamma rays, etc. Its frequency is obviously a factor since that determines the energy in each photon, thus the ability to ionize matter, split molecular bonds or disrupt reactions.

I don't hear anyone whining about visibile light (which, just to remind everyone, is EM radation) and higher energy than microwaves.

Do you have a signal on your cell phone? That's how far.

Obviously dumping constant radiation on people and the environment has a dramatic effect. I am only 21 years old, and I remember seeing dozens of bees every single day back when I was a child. I think I saw one honey bee this year, and I found it dead on my floor.

And it's not just cell towers either; industrial wi-fi transmitters interfere with natural perceptions beyond the physical senses. This is why many parents fight schools after they impliment heavy wi-fi environments, because the children suddenly start suffering from various types of neuroses and physical sickness. Of course the school officials and techs claim that there's nothing wrong with the equipment, and perhaps the solution is to give the children drugs to balance their minds out
