99.9% of all life forms that ever existed on Earth are now extinct - What makes us any different?

It's our cussedness.

For example, I object to being called a "life form." Why? Because I know damn well I'm more than just a "life form!"

And, oddly (?) I'm in a body that I can use to do something with this sense of self-awareness.

So, we're doing something to put some prediction into the scene. And we're doing something to create environments that we can survive in no matter what. We have even managed to figure out how to get into communication with exterior cultures about the problem!

So far our inventiveness has proven to be a double-edged sword. In the end, the human race may not survive what happens on earth. But we know damn well that we could. So we can at least try to do something about it. And that gives us a slight advantage over the dinosaurs, etc.

With all those species going extinct, where are the new ones popping up??

Perhaps it's a perceived negative quality that will save us from extinction.

Our ability to destroy ?!?

i.e. destroy threats, destroy competition for our resources...

That or what we consider extinct is just the next stage in the natural evolution process.
I sort of hope that the rich hiding in their underground bunkers waiting for the 'extinction event' of 2012 to do the depopulation for them will be viewed as troglydites by the humans who were left on the surface of the earth and evolved to the next stage.

Then evil people could be identified by how they look.

We don't eat our young or try to deduce morality by what is natural.

On a long enough timeline. The survival rate for everyone drops to zero.

Were not the first and we wont be the last, and definitely not the pinnacle of all existence, merely another fish in a bowl that thinks the bowl is the whole world, the universe, and all of heaven and earth are between its transparent walls that we do not see.

Is it our superior intellect?

No.

Is it our advanced technology?

No.

Is it our ability to care for one another, for the advancement of mankind?

No.

Is it our need to advance our species to the stars?

No.

Is it our destiny?

No.

Is it our ability to communicate?

NO.

Is it our capacity to grow and learn from our mistakes?

No.

Is it our superior leadership in times of crisis?

No.

What will separate us from the other 99.9% of all life that has lived on this planet?

Do you really want to life and exist forever?

All of existence are just stages, and nothing really dies everything that was is still around, only in other forms. After all even them scientists say that all matter in the universe is just recycled matter from the beginning of the universe.

And at the core what we are and were made of, was always around and will always be around. Only when were gone from this form, it/we will still be around in other forms. Nothing dies really everything just moves on.

I wonder how many 'intelligent' species out in the universe pollute and squander the resources they need to survive? If they are anything like us, probably quite a lot of them. 'Intelligent' shouldn't be used to describe human beings. 'Semi-intelligent' or 'pseudo-intelligent' might be better descriptions.

The only way to change this is to have a benevolent dictator silencing dissenting views. The problem is we don't agree with each other on what's important and we argue with each other.

Dump luck. In any of the major extinction events our ancestors might have perished. I guess mankind is just so damn resiliant. What other landdwelling species can you think of, that can be found on all 5 continents in the arktis and the northpole.

Nothing, not a thing at all. In time we too will become extinct. We humans have just arrived on the scene in the history of the Earth. If the history of Earth is condensed to a year we humans have only been around for about the last 20 minutes.

What makes us different is that we are killing ourselves off.

The only species to ever do that.
